If you come to Floyd and don't visit the Country Store, you are really missing out. The Friday Night Jamboree is an event to remember: in the warmer months, the fun and music spills into the streets as we celebrate true American Music and Dance.. American music is alive and well here- a living tribute to our past, and our performers are taking the music, the dance and the joy right on into the future. Come on in and have a cup of home made soup, a sandwich, a creamy milkshake and a piece of pie from the Jingle Tap Cafe, then enjoy the old- time country store filled with unique and hard-to-find treasures that Grandma used and loved! Barrels of old-fashioned candy, local maps and books, crafts, rugged clothes, and lots of local culture fill the shelves. A joy to visit any time you happen to pass through our town!
This is an experience you cannot miss if you are following The Crooked Trail or are just a lover of good music and local Appalachian culture. The good music, good lunch date and local goods make it a must stop in. I highly recommend it if you are anywhere near this quaint little town.
This was one of my favorite hangouts. some of the local people go there every Friday night. I haven,t been there in awhile need to get back. always had good time .oldtime country and bluegrass music played lots of dancing from flatfooting ,square dancing and slow dancing. lots of people from different parts of country come there even from different countries I have personally meet them; this is one of the main attraction on[ crooked road trail] they are open most every day of the week with plenty good food. lots of friendly faces.
We love to go here to find the unique candy we grew up with. One of the few places to have this many candy selections. Music is great too
We didn't really experience the Friday Jamboree that Floyd Country Store is famous for, as we were passing through town near closing time on a Sunday afternoon, so we had to content ourselves with a browse of the store, and a quick look around town. Something nifty is going on in Floyd, and the Floyd Country Store is at the heart of it.As expected, you will find all the souvenirs you could want from a store that is focused on tourism, however the sense I got was that this is no tourist trap, but instead very much a part of the community. Even though it was near closing time on a Sunday night, local folks were constantly popping in for various reasons (ice cream, anyone?), and the vibe was relaxed, pleasant, and friendly.Floyd is somewhat off the beaten trail, but if you are passing through the area, it's well worth a visit (the drive in on 221 itself is a delight), and no visit to Floyd can be considered complete without stopping in to the Floyd Country Store and saying hello.I'll be back, and hopefully on a Friday night so as to properly complete my Floyd Country Store experience.
Get there early on sat night for a good seat to the live radio show performance. You will smile, tap your toes and nod your head to the wonderful performers.
My husband and I were here during the busy fall season, and the Fri night jamboree was packed wall-to-wall with people. A couple of hints: tickets go on sale at 4:45 and there is a line. I waited until about 5 pm to go by the store, and I walked right in. However, many of the folding chairs were reserved by that time. You can put your jacket or a piece of paper on a chair and no one will take it. You have to be in your seat at 6:30, though, or your seat is up for grabs. Since we did not reserve chairs, we left after a while and came back later when it was less crowded. Some people leave after the first band, and lots more leave after the second. so when we walked in before the third band, there were plenty of chairs available. (I believe there are always three bands.) You get a sticker to wear so that you can come and go as you please. There are groups in the street playing music as well, so you can wander around, watching and listening, then go back to the store when it's less crowded. By the way, the fudge that they sell in the store's cafe is fantastic!
Friends brought us here on a Saturday afternoon and live bluegrass was playing and it was very enjoyable. After noticing the food they were serving looked quite good, we returned on Sunday for a quick lunch before heading home. Wife and I had homemade chicken salad sandwich and pimento cheese sandwich along with a cup of potato & leek soup....all was outstanding. Will come back in the summer to better enjoy the Friday Night Jamboree.
Great place to visit if you like country music, the place was packed, get t her early, loved this place, store is great Friday night jam is well worth a detour
We went to Floyd to enjoy the Friday night music. The tickets do not go on sale until 4:45 pm the night of the show and it is only 5 dollars. Get there early because they only have 165 seats and they go very fast. We were told to put something on a seats to reserve them, so I put my flannel over mine and my husband put down a piece of paper with his name on it. Since we ate there earlier we went and ate supper and came back and sure enough our seats were still reserved. The music was great, but I think they need a bit more room because once they start up the dancing starts and there is little dance floor. The store stays open so you can get drinks, ice cream, desserts, meals, etc during the show. This is local old time and bluegrass music and is something you do not want to miss. The staff is friendly and the price I would say is a touch above average, but still worth going if not for anything else but the music.
We went to Floyd to see the Artisan Festival and the Fall Festival at the Schools. It was so much more than we imagined. A charming mountain town with the neatest shops that have hand made crafts that are absolutely beautiful. The talent in that area is indescribably unique. We visited the town on Friday which included a visit to the shops and the well-known Country Store. The store has a deli and ice cream counter, but the tables for your eating are spaced throughout the store not in a dining room. There is a section of the store for live music and a dance floor. This is unbelievably popular and so much fun. On Saturday we went to the Fall Festival where there are so many booths of handmade crafts that it is unreal. There was one place where apple butter was being made and "poured up" as the lady said to be sold in a couple of hours. The usual festival foods were available. I highly recommend a visit to Floyd and the surrounding area. It was too early for the leaves to have changed, but there was still a lot of beauty to be seen in this small Virginia town.
We had heard about the store and were excited to see it. However, we were there at 10am and the live bluegrass did not start until noon. We did not have the wait time in our schedule, so we had to leave. This place was really neat, though. Hope we can return some day. The town of Floyd was really neat. There was a community market across the street and some other things that looked very interesting.
Enjoyed the music and watching the dancing. There people visiting from England, Korea, and Israel. All the local were very friendly.
Our 'Americana' road trip from NYC included a stop over in Floyd where we found the people, song & dance to be as Americana as Apple Pie. It was standing room only when we arrived at 8pm which we had no issue with. You'll find yourself strolling through the store, tapping your feet, admiring crafts and beautiful cutting boards, all the while tempted by rustic oatmeal cookies, delighted by pies and flirting with creamy ice cream or peanut butter chocolate fudge. You'll want to wander into Floyd's Barbershop next store, if you visit on Friday evening, to complete your Appalachia music experience. If you are traveling the Blue Ridge Parkway - perhaps to see the Mabry Mill- build this stop into your Friday or Saturday itinerary. If the BR Parkway is too slow moving for you RTE 221 will be a little quicker for you. I was so thankful for the unique experience - Woody, that is one great setup you have there.
Walked in looking for a sandwich, wound up staying for a great blue grass jam session and some flat foot dancing. Must stop by if you are in Floyd.
