I'm from New England so have had lots of opportunity to learn about maple sugaring. I was curious about this operation in a state I wouldn't have expected it be. The owner's oldest daughter was minding the store when we visited. She was eager to answer all our questions and gave us some samples (for example, a tasting of A grade vs B grade). We didn't do the tour as there was no sugaring happening due to the season. We did view the stand of maples and observed the piping connecting all the trees. The site behind the sugary was very scenic. You can, of course, buy syrup here - in various size jugs and decorative glass bottles. The sugary is north and east of downtown Petoskey and the drive out there was through farm land, unexpected after driving through mostly forest when we drove to Petoskey.
We timed our visit with the daily tour at 4pm tue to sat(I think)First we went out to see the maple tree and the lines. It's their third year in operation. We had a very intuitive group. How many taps per tree? Depends on tree size. Location of tap? Varies by year. Does it hurt the tree? Not if done follow a set of rules. Next we went inside to see the equipment. It wasn't running, which was probably safer. We saw the various machines. First to bring in the sap. Then to evaporate the water and lastly to cook into maple syrup. Next to the area to make the products - sugar, candies , syrup, cream, and more. Very cool expedited. The boys 9 and 11 had just as many questions. Tour was given by the owner.
We had a tour of the maple farm from the owner. This family business has an amazing story. Free samples of light and dark maple syrup. You won't buy grocery store syrup after tasting their syrup. So delicious!!!
I was very impressed with my brief visit. Though I was not able to complete a tour, I was still provided with answers to my many questions.
