My family of four overall enjoyed the center, even though we did not spot any wolves. At the time we went there were four wolves, three females in one enclosure and one male in another enclosure. We paid the $5 each for a self-guided tour of the trails within the center, unfortunately a few of them were closed. There were still some trails open so we were able to enjoy those. There were some platforms that you could stand on and get a good view of the enclosure, however you are not guaranteed to see wolves on your visit. One of the trails was a sort of memorial for the wolves that had passed away and it was very touching to see the stories of the wolves that had once inhabited the center. Their personalities and attitudes really reinforce the strong bond that connects the wolves. Another one of the trails was an alternate route from the information center to the parking lot which was very fun. There were information signs that were scattered along the trail, and then a wooden cutout of whatever animal was featured would be placed somewhere in the surrounding forest. My whole family enjoyed trying to spy the animal...some are really tricky to find! The woman working in the gift shop and information center was very friendly and incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about wolves so we enjoyed chatting with her.
We were told about the different trails to walk by the woman in the gift shop, walked in a line about 100 feet after she took our families $25 and discovered that was it.the wolf enclosure was overgrown and showed no evidence of any animals(wolves pace around fence edges and wear trails).the information signs on the trail are all very faded and are nearly impossible to read making it hard to say anything remotely good about this place having any educational even.the woman at the education center(over priced gift shop) seemed as though her wolf knowledge was all from the kids book for sale in the gift shop.she chuckled as we left and said"when you get back to the parking lot you can look at them from there".what I'm saying is that it wasn't only that we didnt see anything that made it unpleasant, it was the feeling that we had just bought our kids snake oil elixer from a genuine scheister.
We visited the wolf education center In Winchester Idaho today . When we payed for the entrance to the exhibit the person behind the counter told us about all the different trails to walk. We payed our entrance fee and continued out to the trails only to find all the trails were all closed! When I went back into the exhibit and ask the person behind the counter why she didn't tell us it was closed, she just laughed. There was another couple there complaining about the same thing.Be Cautious!!
We came here in 2009 and wanted to visit again. We drove from Moscow, ID to a small town south of there called Winchester. We got to see three wolves in our early morning tour and then our guide left us to view the observation decks for as long as we wished. This place survives on donations and visitor center purchases. It is a great place for kids and families to learn. It costs about $5 for a self guided tour and two other options for an early morning tour or one in the evening.
This is right behind the Winchester State Park Campground, which is very nice. The wolves are some of the Sawtooth Pack members. They are in a forested area which is fenced in so the wolves don't escape . You hike around the outside of the fenced area and you can most likely see the wolves. Sightings are not all the time, as the wolves move around, sleep, lay down ect. We were able to see three in the first section, and in the other section , we were able to see the old 16 year old wolf! When ever the wolves hear a truck, they go right to the fence. Highly recomended!
