We were referred here by a friend that liked the trip so we gave it a shot. Prepaid online, showed up 15 minutes prior to our time as requested in the confirmation email. Our guide was not there and we waited around for 45 minutes and they never showed up or contacted us. We ended up having to leave, very disappointed that our only chance to kayak was ruined by the guide not showing up. Another guide from a different company was there and we took his card. Next year he will definitely be getting our money instead of this outfit.
We booked an 11am launch time with this company. We arrived 10 minutes prior as we were instructed. By 11:15am they had still not shown up. There was a family of 7 waiting to launch with us as well and the mother called him. He gave some excuse of a "new system" and not knowing that he had customers at 11am. He said he would be there by Noon. We waited until 11:30am and then we left. We didn't trust that he would even show up at Noon and were even less certain we would be picked up on time after the paddle. We were incredibly disappointed as we were really looking forward to this trip and the weather was perfect. Very unhappy with this company and would not use again.
A staff member met us at the starting location. She provided us with all the kayaking gear that was needed including a plastic pouch to keep our valuables. My husband and I kayaked for 4 hours and a staff member was waiting for us at the designated end location. GREAT EXPERIENCE. It was our first time kayaking and we loved it. Thank you so much for making it super easy for us. We just showed up and the River Guide Kayaking team took care of everything. We WILL be back :)I agree with other reviewers- some more instructions on how to handle if the kayak flips and how to get rid of excess water would have been helpful. The water in Kinnickinnic River is certainly super cold and the current can be fast in different locations. You do need someone with muscles to help you take out water from the kayak. After 3 times falling from the kayak/ emptying water, strong currents - we were SO ready to be done. It still took us another hour to get to our end location. We were exhausted by the end but was still a great experience.
I am giving this 3 stars only because I didn't really know what I was getting into with the numerous rapids, slippery rocks, stairs to climb down carrying the kayak, etc. This should be noted on their website. They aren't kidding when they say wear cheap sunglasses and sandals with straps. As previous poster indicated, despite the name, the trips do not include a guide. One half hour in, I flipped my kayak in the rapids. Although the water (very cold) was only two feet deep, I could not walk to the edge because of the strong current and slippery rocks. The kayak filled with water and became extremely heavy and floated downstream. My husband was able to stop it, but without sandals with straps, hurt his feet in the process. It was very difficult to empty out the water even with two of us as the current wants to push you along and the kayak is heavy and the rocks slippery. I would highly suggest that you know how to handle the kayak before attempting this body of water. The route is peaceful and quiet and the pickup was on time.
I found this place through a Groupon and was not sure what to expect since I had never kayaked before. These people were great! Very nice and even offered us towels and ice cold water at pickup! They also give you plastic sleeves/necklace for your phone so you can still take pictures & not worry if it falls in the water. They gave us thorough instruction & a friendly sendoff and we were on our way. I loved that there was no guide, this allowed us to go at our own pace and make any stops we wanted. Great family experience! Thank you RGK!!
My son and I took a kayak trip today that was a great experience. The folks at RGK were very friendly, attentive and timely. I would recommend this to anyone interested in a river trip!
Great trip! RGK was very accommodating of our large group (13 total). The waivers were on line and easy. Plastic cases/necklaces were provided for our cell phones so we could bring them without worry and still take pictures. Pick up was ON TIME (not always my experience in the past with other companies) and with a smile! The river and scenery was gorgeous and the kayak trip was just the right length (8 miles - about 3 hours total time at a relaxing pace). A great value for the money. I would definitely use this company again!
I'll just make a list:1- We were allowed to go on the river while the water was abnormally high and fast-moving.2- The only contact we had from the company left to run personal errands while we were on the river.3- The company, despite being named River GUIDE Kayaks does not have a guide that goes with you for safety/navigation.4- The site says they give you kayaking instructions, and our instructions were literally, "To go left, paddle right, and vice versa."We both overturned within minutes of being on the river, because the "experts" made a poor judgment call, as well as some poor communication. Would have been great to know how to flip the kayak back over when I went under, how to get water out of the kayak, or how dangerous the rocks on the bottom can be.
This review is for the new Indiana branch of River Guide Kayaks. We had a great trip kayaking for about 4 hours down the White River. We had a hard time finding the launch point and the website could definitely be more specific, but we called and eventually found them. We were surprised to learn that we were kayaking on our own, without a guide (the name made us think that wouldn't be the case), but it was perfect. There's no way to get lost and kayaking on our own allowed us to go at our own pace. The river was lovely and the kayaks were clean and comfortable. We'll definitely be doing it again.
Very disappointed as four of us purchased a group voucher last spring. Tried to schedule online, well in advance, with no luck. Space was advertised, booked, then I would get an email saying my trip was cancelled. I called directly, several times and could not actually speak to anyone- it sounded like someone's personal voicemail. I then emailed, to which response was SLOW and very confusing- basically, they could not accommodate our group of 4 for the rest of the season. Whatever was showing up as "open" online, was not accurate and there was no explanation as to why. I was also told the "value" of my voucher did not expire. After the poor service thus far, we will not be rolling this discount over for next season, and pay MORE for a trip. Total bummer.
Great time and great experience. Excellent kayaking outfitters. We will do it again! The river was beautiful and serene with enough rapids to make it exciting.
