Bruce from Vhupo Tours picked us up and returned to us directly to our hotel, which was perfect and convenient for our short stay in Johannesburg. He was very informative throughout the tour and shared his own experiences growing up in the area and answering our unending questions about the education, politics, history, and culture of South Africa. We were felt comfortable the whole time and were so happy we decided to do this tour rather than trying to do it ourselves without really having time to orient ourselves in Johannesburg (we were only there one day). I was a little apprehensive at first about going with a company that only had one review here, but want to assure you that everything was great:) We would definitely do it over again. I would add one tip: make sure you have a little extra money in smaller denominations of ZAR/Rand (they are the same thing). You will have a chance to get out and walk with another tour guide in the squatters village, which is really eye-opening to see, but they are trying to earn a living too and ask for donations. We went with Bruce, who is from Soweto, and is part of Vhupotours (www.vhupo-tours.com) to visit this township. Bruce was very knowledgeable and it was far more than a "drive-by" tour. He really knows the place, having grown up there. He was a font of information. The tour included just me, another woman, and my husband. The tour not only talked about Soweto's important past, but also its present. We saw upper middle class, working class, and poor people's houses. We went on a walking tour in a poor area, led by locals, and visited a preschool. A plus is that it was very easy to understand Bruce (to my American ears, it is not always easy to understand people). I couldn't recommend this tour more highly.
