We stopped on a whim here in between breweries...It was a cool experience as we had never had Mead before. The gal was super nice and explained everything about each of the samples. The Mead was very sweet, but I am glad we tried. If you are in Portland, check it out
I am a heavy wine drinker and love wine tasting. Naturally when we decided to go mead tasting I was a bit dubious. So, mead is NOTHING like wine, but the experience at the meadery was on par with the best wine tastings I have had. They have a very large variety and the lady doing the tasting was very knowledgeable, being one of only 4 employees who work there. These 4 employees run the entire show, including hand bottling and packaging the bilk mead. She was friendly, and after hearing that we were not locals, and interested in mead, she actually gave us a tour, even though it was not in the allotted tour time, as well as a special tasting. Great experience, well worth the $5 tasting fee.
We had a fantastic tasting and tour here. The mead is really interesting. Some is delicious, some not my taste. The lady doing our tasting was super friendly and knowledgeable, and really made it an enjoyable experience. Highly recommend this as a must-do in Portland! Tasting is $5 per person but very worth it as there are many flavors to taste, along with some seasonal specials, and the portions were generous.
I'm not a huge fan a mead as it tends to give me a quick headache, that said, these Honey Makers are gifted and are putting some great effort into they're products. We tasted everything - loved the Ram Island tea tea. Also liked the cool logos gifts and t-shirts to take home.
Tasting room is nicely done. Owner was working the counter when we were there and was quite nice. He seemed very excited about what he does and that makes the experience better. The different varieties were quite nice and we were pleasantly surprised that many were not overly sweet. We were most surprised by how much we liked the lavender. Had to bring a few bottles home. (Owner was also nice enough to give us and the other guy in the tasting room at that time a brief peek into the facility and an explanation of the process - nice little mini-tour!)
I love mead, and this place just made me love it more. The bartender knew all about the meads was just all around wonderful. She had a great sense of humor, she was friendly and fun to hang out with while we tried some awesome mead. I've never had carbonated mead before, but I will have it again. And of all the places we had tastings at, I wil be having some shipped to Virginia.
I'm not a big mead fan, but they've got some tasty flavors, it was very busy so the girl doing the pouring seemed rushed, but I will definitely look for this in my local wine shop
Very personable, the owner spent time with us explained each and every mead and let us taste each one then refused a tip! We bought several bottles and will go back if ever in town again! Recommend the iced tea and spiced mead very good! Prices are very reasonable as well.
We walked to Maine Mead Works from downtown and sampled many tasty brews. I usually don't like mead, but these were some of the best I've ever had, work a trip.
I thought I had posted a review from my phone, but checking today I see that it never transpired. I first tried Maine Mead Works when I received it as a gift, and it became my favorite alcoholic beverage. I live in NY state, near dozens of Finger Lake wineries and craft breweries, so I have sampled my share. The mead in NYS does not compare to the honey used in Maine - the smoothness is an understatement. I am not a connoisseur of fine wines, just an average middle-aged enjoyer. On our trip to Portland in May 2014, this was the first stop, and most important on our agenda since I cannot get this easily. We sampled all, and the staff was friendly and informative to all who entered. This is a small and casual place, and for the company to offer tours is beyond the call. They are known for their products throughout Maine, and we even found it on tap at one of the awesome restaurants in town (Grace). Needless to say, I stocked up and bought 2 cases that I have been sipping on the deck this summer. Another trip is in the works so I can get a few more cases to cover us through the winter until spring. Honestly, I don't enjoy any other wines or meads as much as the Maine Mead Works!
This meadery is a low-frills establishment, run by fewer than half a dozen employees, but the product is high-end enough to make you think it must be a whole lot bigger. Everything is made with love and dedication to the Craft of mead… a perfect example of small-town America and what good artists can produce. It was rainy today so after lunch we headed over to the Mead Works for a tasting. Tastings are available "on demand" all day, and are complementary. The barista was knowledgeable about mead, the process of making it, and each distinct bottle. We tried six different varieties of mead, as well as their own cider, iced tea with a punch, and lavender lemonade (my favorite). Between each pour, the barista gave us a little space to think and discuss our thoughts on the wine or mixes. We then realized it was just before 3pm, so we stayed to take the tour which is offered twice daily, at 11am and 3pm. It's a no-frills tour through the warehouse, but very interesting. In just ten minutes the seven of us on the tour saw the raw honey being fermented, the exclusive process, the flavored barrels, and second fermentation processes. We also got to see the labeling, in which Every Bottle is labelled BY HAND.The love and care for these ingredients and products is really honorable. Finally we were back in the light-strewn tasting room where we purchased several bottles including the semi-sweet mead, lavender mead, and lavender lemonade. There was no pressure to buy, but purchasing was very easy.Check it out for yourself. It's a simple trip and you're bound to learn something new and delight your taste buds!
Never had tried Mead before but stopped in here when we were in Portland touring Breweries. To my surprise, I actually like Mead. The tastings are free and the staff will spend the time with you to explain the product, how it’s made and features about each type of mead. It was hard to whittle it down to just one we liked, so we stocked up and hope we can find it back in MA. Dry hopped and cranberry were two of our favorites.
Stopped here in conjunction with the beer tour and it was one of my favorite stops. The staff was friendly and the tour was brief but eye opening. Really all you need to know is you probably will not be leaving with just one bottle, it was that tasty!
We checked this place out on our first trip to Portland. Glad we did the tour first then the tasting, which were both free! Learned a lot about mead and their unique process. Loved all the products, owner very sweet and knowledgeable - bought three varieties to bring home as they don't ship to NJ! Fun!
We stopped in to do a tasting, have a tour and learn more about mead. Unfortunately there was not a tour(we stopped on a Friday mornining) and the server was more interested in entertaining her toddler than doing our tasting, so needless to say we dod not learn much about mead. This was a big disapointment and a far cry from what was offered on the brochures.
