You'll want to have time to walk around the property near the light house. Each area gives you a different amazing view. All are definite photo opportunities. If you close your eyes, and listen to the crashing of the water on the rock cliffs it so centering. The park is well mapped out, and has nice signage. I went in March is was still very cold, and packed with snow, so they park employees were not working and we were unable to tour the actual lighthouse.
Beautiful spot regardless of the season! The cliff walk was wonderful- have visited in summer and winter.
You will see it over and over that this spot is picturesque that is because it truly is. Of course the lighthouse is the focal point but there is so much more. There are trails taking you along the coast of the cliffs. The entire place is maintained by the community and volunteers and they do a great job. Entry is free. You can drop a donation if you would like. We were here in the winter and the snow made this whole place look like a winter wonderland. I can only imagine the beauty in the spring and summer. If your in the area put this on your to-do list. It's only about a 15 min ride from Portland. Pet friendly as well.
There is this bizarre thing about Maine....from like Jan to April EVERY THING IS CLOSED! It is like they dont think about winter tourist?? I cant understand WHY you would ever need to close a lighthouse museum...it is indoors, right?Anyways, since we were in Maine we wanted to see ONE lighthouse! We went and thankfully it was in a park, so we could see it and get pictures, but learn nothing about it! SAD!!!!!Since it was free to go see (the outside) I would say definitely go, but remember that Maine doesnt not care about you if it is Jan to April....you can see the outside, but nothing else!
What a beautiful coastal treasure! This light house and the surrounding walking trails as so picture-perfect it's hard to believe. My husband and I enjoyed walking around the area enjoying the beautiful views and picturesque environment. An absolute must-see in Portland!
Portland Headlight is a must see for anyone visiting the Portland area. It is a beautiful spot and the museum is interesting. There are food vendors in the good weather and there are two playgrounds for kids plus lots of walking trails. The town has spent time and money landscaping the whole park and it is magnificent!!
Great place to take pictures and to cool off on a hot day. There are walking paths and picnic tables.
As a resident of Cape Elizabeth, the jewel that is Fort Williams and home to the Portland Head Light is a gift for us all and a free gift to the rest of the world from our town to you. There is no fee to walk along the paths and to see this beautiful light that protects so many sailors from our beautiful but rocky coastline. Enjoy a picnic, a walk along the paths, an exploration of the WWII fortifications or a place to take beautiful photos.
Beautiful place for pics anytime of the year. Beautiful when snow on the ground!!! It is definitely a spot to see but nothing more than to get out and walk around. Ft Williams is a great place to picnic and take a walk. Scenery is AMAZING!!
This is the lighthouse so many think of when imaging on the Maine coast and for good reason. It is the most picturesque spot my wife and I have been too along the Maine coast since moving here a little over a year ago. The history, the scene, and the park are all worth the trip. We went over Labor Day weekend, and even with the large crowds it did nothing to hinder the experience.
the start of my new obsession... lighthouses. before this I couldn't understand why so many people were into lighthouses. I took hundreds of pictures of the beautiful scenery. after this, we stopped at at least 10 more lighthouses from Maine to Canada. the park next to it is nice as well. there were lots of people swimming, however, you wouldn't get me into that water. I touched it with my toes in august.. brrrr!. the lighthouse also has a museum, however, we opted out. no bathroom FYI
We stumbled upon this by accident, but it was just a very gorgeous scene. I also loved the history portion inside the small museum. Definitely worth a visit! Just go to the bathroom before going here because they do not have good bathroom facilities!
By all means, go so see this spot if you are in Portland for a bit. It delivers plenty of scenery, history and charm. The kids will love it too!
The view was amazing. We took a lot of pictures.I'm very glad we took the time to stop and see it on our way back home.
When in the Portland region, this is a definite stop you need to make. The views will take your breath away. They have a museum inside as well. Gorgeous!!!
