If you never tried the Port Jefferson ferry. Try it. It is much better than driving around and with the price of gas and tolls....

We take the Ferry at least once a year. It is far more relaxing than driving all around from Longs Island to CT. It is comfortable with several different boats running. They all serve some kind of food to make the trip easier as well. This is good for everyone. As for Seniors the discount is only for walk on passengers and not for anyone traveling in a car which does not seem right. Beyond that it is family friendly. Dogs are not allowed in the cabin other than service dogs but on a rainy day they often allow them inside which is a lot better and no one seems to mind.

This trip was expensive but pretty much worth the ticket. I just wish I had known - for our trip into Port Jefferson, the ferry was suggested but, and on this I would have to agree with previous reviews that the website could use improvements, we were intimidated by the process and timing and ended up driving through NYC. Our return trip we went right to the terminal to check it out. Boarding was organized but a few signs that explained that you buy your ticket in the main cabin after you park your car onboard would have been helpful - we had to make three trips back to the car (it was bitterly cold) before we could settle in. The window tables have outlets - great time to charge devices. The voyage itself was very pleasant and relaxing - concessions are the same for any other captive audience - pricey but decent. I didn't go into cocktail lounge since we had a long drive ahead of us. I managed to get some work done but would have certainly appreciated wifi - what a wonderful time to present via internet an interactive website so we could learn about this old ferry system! There were some video game machine available and televisions mounted in corners of main cabin - but difficult to hear over usual boat noises. Friendly staff helped the experience - on the whole, the ride and avoidance of rush hour in NYC was very worth it. I wish more places would make use of ferries.

Call and make your reservation because the website is not user friendly. The enter and exit is crazy with the loading area so small. Must pay attention to your surroundings as you go through the loading dock. Watch out for pedestrians and drivers not knowing what they are doing. Always a great escape for spontaneous trips and a fun boat ride to CT.

I was bored and decided to spend a day across Long Island Sound by way of the ferry. From the CT side, enter at Bridgeport's Harbor Yard. Parking is ample, but you'll have to walk to the dock from there. They need shuttle service for this as it's risky walking on the slim street where vehicles travel also to board the ferry. On a clear day, its an amazing trip on the sound. Once ay Port Jeff, shops are plentiful and food and drink spots too.Food and drinks available on the boat and I just love to stay on the top deck enjoying the breeze and the sound.Take a trip and enjoy !

We've had good experiences with this car ferry between Bridgeport, CT and Port Jefferson, NY (on Long Island). If you are heading to Long Island from the Northeast, the ferries do a great job of allowing one to avoid the traffic around NYC. The crossing takes slightly over an hour and the vessels are almost always right on time. We make reservations, but you cam go standby. We've arrived early on occasion and went into the standby lane for the earlier boat and have always been boarded (with our car). The passenger cabin is roomy and has many windows, a cocktail lounge, a snack bar, a couple of TV's, and WiFi. IT isn't cheap - $56 one way for driver and car. Passengers are extra. But we feel it is a good value for what is delivered and take the ferry without question each time we go to L.I. The staff is friendly. One caution - the cars are tightly packed. Don't get stuck in your car for the trip because the door can't open. They'll help, if they find you.

From Port Jefferson to Bridgport and back it is the best way to travel. You can have a snack or sit in or out and enjoy the scenery. The staff is most helpful and curtious.

Whenever possible, we take the ferry from Bridgeport to Port Jefferson, avoiding the traffic in New York City. If you are traveling on a Friday evening to Long Island, the traffic can be horrendous! This is a great alternative! Enjoy your ride across the sound, and avoid the stress!

Excellent trip. On time. Great booking times and friendly staff. Have taken several times and will continue to do so. Easy transport to port Jeff.

The ride can be a little bumpy, and the crew on the car deck can be a little head-strong with there vehicle jockeying.... but over all, it's better than driving and very relaxing. I never saw the need to sandwich cars on top of each other when the boat isn't full. That just makes for dented doors and angry passengers. But besides that un nessecary evil. It's the only way to fly. Coffee is always hot, and the beer is always cold. In a little over an hour, your across the sound and on your way..

This was great! Easy, enjoyable and saved a bunch of time by not having to drive thru the City and construction.

Always enjoy the ride. It is a bit pricey though. Too bad that bridgeport is so run down. It would be a great thing if it became a tourist seaport destination on that side Also they should have later ferries when there are events at the Webster arena or hockey games

A nice way to avoid NYC traffic if you're traveling between Suffolk County and New England. Figure the trip for an hour and a half by the time the cars are off loaded.

On a recent visit to family on Long Island my wife said she wanted to visit Martha's Vineyard, which is another island and located two hundred miles to the east; further if one drove - making the trip via NYC. So I decided to take the local car and passenger ferry to Connecticut. Great decision. We got up early, catching the 730 am boat. It was a slightly chilly but beautiful fall morning. The Sound was flat, the colors brilliant. An easy hour and a half later we touched ground and made an equally easy drive to Woods Hole and our second ferry trip of the day. The B-PJ Steamship Co. facilities were very good. We made reservations on-line and I managed to loose our confirmation email before departure. I barely waited when I called their toll-free line, and positive response to the problem. I had also emailed, asking that the confirmation be resent. That arrived within minutes. You can really tell what a company is made of when you have a problem. I received great customer service from the Steamship Company.
