We did the longer trip to Wagon Gap with a group riding in an open-air rail car. Absolutely fabulous time....stunning scenery, informative engineer, and a delightful lunch stop at Blue Creek Lodge. We HIGHLY recommend this fun excursion of riding the rails through the beautiful Colorado mountains.
Had to take this little railroad trip and I wasn't disappointed. My wife and I went with another couple while staying in South Fork. I am already a railroad nut and I really enjoyed the trip, as did everyone. Very beautiful place for an informative adventure on rails of the past. The gentleman that was the "engineer" was very knowledgeable and engaging. I recommend this trip to all.
Travelled with a group to this railway. Wonderful scenery and a great train ride in most unusual railcars. The bonus was the friendliness and personal attention of Don and Bob Shank. The knowledge of Bob was amazing on railways and the local area. Here's to them getting to Creede!
This train journey was spectacular, the views next to the river Animas were beautiful only spoiled by several incidents of youngsters displaying their back sides!!
We rode this little train and what a blast. We rode the long ride.Don was great and so very fun.His knowledge of the rail history was great. At the station he showed us a new rail car he got and was very interesting. If you're ever in So Fork take time out and ride this Gem.
My family had a wonderful time including my little grandsons (5 & 2).We took the 3 pm tour which stopped for ice cream. Along the way we stopped some wild life and our engineer was so knowledgeable and fun!!
If you want to truly appreciate the scenery of the Colorado mountains, this is a must on your visit to Southfork. The conductor (Tom) was extremely knowledgeable on the history of the railway. They are in the process of restoring a 1900 railway car that has to be seen to believe.
Love love love this train ride! The engineers are so friendly and fun and they tell you lots of nifty info about their train and the local area. Beautiful scenery...there is nothing about this train ride that is now wonderful! We highly recommend this to all our visitors! Denver and Rio Grande Railroad is a real treasure in our area and we love it!
Particularly, the continuing historical narrative provided by train operator. Lunch at Wagon Wheel Gap was excellent and well priced. Trip encourages interaction and friendship with other riders.
I have been to South Fork many times but had never taken this tour till this weekend. Tour was very informative and the lunch was great, very kid friendly and very scenic. My daughter loved it and so did we.
If you have only seen the Rio Grande between South Fork and Creede from an automobile, do yourself a favor, shut off your cell phone and take this trip by rail. The scenery is spectacular, the guide is entertaining and informative, and the lunch is great.
Ride was very interesting; Guide informative. Lunch was great! Good way to spend most of a day in South Fork
We did the route from South Fork to Wagon Wheel Gap that included the stop for lunch. The lunch was "okay" but the ride, views, and info along the way was awesome. It's an "open air" train ride and we were lucky to have sunny skies the entire time, but had it rained, we would've been caught without protection. I also recommend that you not take toddlers. There is nowhere for them to go but in your lap or on the seat next to you and the one that was on our ride pitched a fit for a lot of the ride. It took away from us hearing what the guide would stop to show and tell, and I don't think his parents had a grand time trying to keep him quiet and from throwing a tantrum. You'll see views of the mountains that you just can't see from the road. I totally recommend this trip!
We were lucky to have sunny weather for the trip up to Silverton. In the Rio Grande car you have open sides so photos are stunning. Unfortunately, the weather changed and we got rain all the way back to Durango. I had on a long sleeve T-shirt, a wind breaker and a fleece jacket and I was still cold. The rain comes in on you in your seat. A small umbrella would have helped keep some of it off. Just come prepared if you ride in an open car. I also got a lot of cinders in my eyes even though I wear glasses. I'm not sure how to prevent that short of safety glasses. It's part of the experience, so go and enjoy. Wishing you sunny weather for your trip!
Take advantage of seeing the back country from this train. The scenery was totally awesome. Rode from Alamosa to LaVeta & back to Alamosa. You'll see views that can not be seen from any roadtrip.
