For this little town the zoo is a must to doSuper clean really cheap easy to walk and they have enough animals for little kids to watch perfect size for a couple of hours without kids getting too tired and they have a great little gift store everything under $20 I just love this place
The recent upgrades have made this venue a real highlight and a great getaway to relax and enjoy the outdoors. Excellent exhibits and well maintained. Could still use some upgrades in some areas but a lot of progress has occurred over the last year.
The zoo was so fun. We honestly didn't expect to find a zoo in this little town. You could feed the birds and they had so many animals including a reptile exhibit.
I expected less than what I got. It only cost $3 for entry, the walk took about 1.5 hours. The animals were up close, you could actually get within 8 feet of tigers, bears, giraffes and many more. Some of the exhibits needed some work, but overall, I was very impressed with the zoo for the price of admission.
In a very comfortable and clean setting the HPZ is worth a trip with kids or not. Quite a variety of animals - giraffes, bears, tigers, birds, snakes, primates. Well kept area and friendly staff. Low cost entry makes it worth an hour plus seeing the animals.
I wasn't expecting much from this zoo before going. I was completely shocked and very happy to discover how cute and well maintained it was compared to other small zoos. I love looking at the animals and to me it's very important to see if their exhibit is well maintained and clean from debris. Something else I look for is the condition of the pathways and landscaping around the zoo. It all seemed very clean and tidy. The landscaping was very pretty. To me it looked as though they took pride in their zoo. I appreciated how close you could get to the animals. This may be a downside to others, but I loved being able to get so close to the tiger, bobcats and bears. My husband and I actually startled the tiger who didn't realize we were walking up the path behind it as he was standing at the front of his exhibit. He sort of jumped when he heard us and turned around and hissed and bared his fangs. Some might find that disturbing, but I thought it was rather neat. The only animals we couldn't really see were the wolves as they were tucked away in their little shelter at the back of the exhibit. Most zoos have a large area of separation in between guests and animals that involve sunken exhibits and multiple fences. This zoo does not offer that. You get right up close and personal. You could literally touch the tortoises. They have multiple signs of "no feeding" or "will bite". The reptile house was very small and very hot. it was also quite dark. It was still neat to see the animals so close, although it seemed some of the glass needed to be cleaned a bit better, or maybe it was the lack of lighting. All in all, for what it was, the amount of animals available were satisfying for the area. I enjoyed it quite a bit and would love to return. On a side note, I would like to mention something that bothered me a tad. I realize some people do not like zoos and think they are inhumane. While I am no animal expert I will say there was a bear who would continuously pace in the same 6 foot section. It appeared he does this often as there is a dirt path there. His exhibit is large and full of toys. However, he did look a bit anxious in the way he was pacing. Again, I am no animal expert, especially on behaviors of bears, it just kind of through me off seeing it. It just didn't "feel right".
It is a very good small town zoo. We enjoyed the time there. It is a nice way to spend time if waiting on appointments or such. That's what we do
Really surprised moving from Detroit., how big this zoo really was .I was amazed at the amount of animals they have , the Black bears were pacing , worrying me a little , shows signs of mental stress, however the overall cleanliness of the zoo was very good . The staff was very kind answering any and all questions we had . for a friendly small zoo this one cant be beat
Don't expect all of the frills of a big city zoo, but we really love going to this one. Animals are up close and the atmosphere is nice. Relaxing walk and not very busy. The reptile house could use a new air filter. A few of the exhibits need bigger cages, but I am sure they are running off of a small budget.
Poor poor poor animals. This is the most depressing place in all of New Mexico. The animals are poorly cared for. How hard is it to give them some fresh water? Why is the symbol of American freedom (a bald eagle) caged in a shady poop filled exhibit. Clean the tanks of snakes please!! That poor otter!! He didn't even have a slide to play on because it was floating in his water bowl that was moldy on top. Overall, I'd say this COULD be a real gem. Please, someone give this zoo some money.
Clovis is a small place, so a zoo of this size is very surprising. Some of the highlights - giraffes, a tiger, some bears, lemurs, huge pythons. Only $3 an adult...less for a kid. Nice place to spend the afternoon.
The zoo is small but surprising with a nice layout and a good variety of animals to enjoy. The sidewalks are older but the reptile house is nice, It is well kept and the animals look like they are well taken care of
A great place to bring the little ones. Great park along side. Lots of tree's. Wnen you need to relay this is the place to do it.
Me and my wife take our grandkids here on almost every one of their visits. They love it and we appreciate our little towns efforts in keeping the park clean, the animals healthy and giving our community a nice place to go. There's times when the park is free if things are going on at the City Park adjacent to the Zoo. We're gonna invest in a year pass this coming 2014 so we can have an excuse to visit as much as the kids will let us.
The zoo was way better then expected. The animals were well cared for and seemed happy. The zoo is bigger then you'd expect from the size if the town.
