The monument grounds are beautiful set on the Rio Grande with unobstructed views of the Sandias. Plan on spending a couple of hours to look through the museum and enjoy the outdoor exhibits. The docents are very knowledgeable! I would also suggest bringing a snack and enjoying a walk along the river and / or sitting at one of the many picnic tables to just enjoy the scenery. Special events happen throughout the year -- check the calendar (pottery demonstrations, etc). Enjoy!
I have the culture pass which works for admissions to the Coronado Monument so decided to stop en route from Albuquerque to Jemez Springs. There were some interesting faded hide paintings and a nice walk by the Rio Grande but the site was otherwise not up to the standards of other NM historical sites.
An hour or so here is time well spent. Fascinating place with well informed guides. Follow the path amid the ruins, and you'll learn about the pueblo people who inhabited the area centuries ago. A trip down the ladder of the kiva is one of the highlights of the tour. The other is the room with the murals. A friend who is a nationally recognized art historian and scholar was impressed with the quality of the talks and the expertise of the guides. So were the rest of us.Coronado is just a few miles off I-25 in bernalillo, a short detour if you are headed to Santa Fe and well worth the time.I've taken out of town visitors twice now and will return.
I used a day of vacation to drive to the monument only to discover it was closed on Tuesday - the one day I was going to be in town. Not a word about closing on the literature or on the website - I can understand it being closed - but please post something on the website or literature or even a phone number to call first - so that people can plan accordingly. terribly disappointed
This place as magical worth the trip and the entrance fee $6 make sure to visit the mirrored room and find out about visiting the KIBA.
We were not expecting much - it was one of the least things to see on our culture pass and we had a day to kill. It was a wonderful surprise. They have some of the original ancient wall paintings on display. You also are able to decend via ladder into the kiva where they were found and see recreations of the paintings in situ. The docent tour was excellent. The gift shop has great, well priced items. We really enjoyed our visit and highly recommend it.
Yep, when Coronado came through here it was a living breathing Pueblo. Now, the ruins are maintained by the State Parks system and numerous organizations including the University of New Mexico. A very enjoyable and comfortable tour of about an hour of self-guided trails.
If you're going to Albuquerque and have time to spare, the Coronado Monument is worth a visit. The grounds are well care for and the walking trails are easy and FLAT. My favorite is the restored kiva. I shows a person what it looks like where most non-native Americans are not permitted to enter. The site is about a half hour south of Santa Fe and a half hour north of Albuquerque in the town of Bernalillo. It wont take more than an hour to visit the site and picnic tables are available.I have been visiting this site for 50 years and I never tire of it. I took my wife there on our first date over 40 years ago. Both are holding-up nicely.
