Decided to take a drive on a lazy Sunday and after an hour or so of picturesque Texas countryside we stumbled across Rohan Meadery. What a delightful and quaint working farm nestled in the countryside. Did the $5 tasting, which was unique and fun, having never tried mead before. Talked a lot with the owner and strolled around the farm. Fed the chickens, patted the dog, admired the bees and just enjoyed the peaceful scenery on a cool autumn day. Also, bought some mead and honey to take home.Really lovely place and we'll definitely be returning to try out the different meads as they come in season!
My daughter visited here last week and had such high regards that we visited on Saturday - ventured out in the rain. We were greeted by Edison, one of their very friendly Great Pyrenees dogs. The chickens were taking shelter under a near by truck. We were the only ones visiting at the time and had great conversations with the owners. We sampled 5 of the mead wines that were very good - starting with the dry - Orange spice - very light, Peach & Lavender - very good - blackberry & cranberry were equally refreshing. We ended with the Honeymoon mixed with a bit of bourbon - wonderful. Very relaxing and enjoyable - we bought 4 bottles and some wild honey as well. The owners also told us of 2 places in Houston that carry the mead wine - very close to home. They are in the process of building a shaded picnic area with tables to enjoy the peace and quiet and sip the mead. Delightful stop in the road between Roundtop and La Grange. Must try! Worth the $5 for 5 tastings!
It was interesting to visit Rohan Meadery and learn a bit about the history of mead, and the early Texas Czech settlers. Can't say that I'm a fan of the drink (others sampling along with us did seem to like it), but it was fun to try different varieties and to browse their little gift store. Glad that we made the time to visit.
The family running this place are incredibly friendly and love educating people about Mead. This was our first experience drinking it and we will be back again and again. They had live music and there were tame chickens running everywhere. So much fun and look forward to it again
First time to taste mead and really liked several flavors. The price is very reasonable and the staff is knowledgeable and friendly. $5.00 to taste 5. After the tasting, I bought a glass of cranberry honeywine and sipped it while watching colorful chickens on the patio. I plan to return as new flavors are added regularly.
This is NOT the mead I have known and not liked. These folks know what they're doing and produce a very good product. We brought bottles home to enjoy later. The tasting room was full of others, and it was great fun to discuss the different meads with them. They also charge for the tasting without waiving the fee when bottles are purchased. Maybe this is a Texas thing.A bit out of the way, but on a beautiful sunny day, it was a great stop!
This is worth the out of the way trek. They are very friendly and helpful. They have many different types and flavors of Mead (wine made from honey). The tasting is very good and the sommelier is very informed on the different styles and types of mead. The mead is made on site and they have bottles of mead and other items.
