Well worth the mile or so walk from the parking lot, good view of river in fall and winter. Reproduction fiberglass cannon command the waterway. Trail to river shore results in a view of the James River ghost fleet of inactive ships.

We had a little difficulty finding the place because of a road closure, but once we were there, we found it to be quite serene. We were the only visitors at the time, so we were able to walk the trail to the fort area at our own pace and enjoy the view. Most of the actual fort is gone; little remains of the earthenworks, so that was a little disappointing. Also, because trees have grown up in the 150 years since the Civil War, we weren't able to see exactly what the soldiers saw from the lookout positions that were there. The information that was posted around the area was VERY interesting reading, so that part was quite enjoyable. My favorite part, however, was the view from the top of the trail as we headed back to the parking lot. The bridge over a marshy area and the surrounding trees were spectacular!

It took a quite a challenge to find the Fort. We followed the road signs for the fort only to discover the road that road was closed. We had to backtrack to get to the fort. No fort, only several cannons and a diagram of were the fort was. Nice walk to the fort.

We are photographers but there was not much to photograph, was hoping for a view from the fort but all woods, take bug spray.

Recently tried to get to Ft Huger [ a civil war battery emplacement on the left bank[ Smithfield side] of the James. The added attraction was the view of the James River MRAD fleet anchored upstream from the fort. Well your best bet is Google Earth, because the road id blocked off about 1/2 mile from the fort. The road signs off RT 10 indicate the location of the fort, but not until you travel the 4 miles + into the hinterlands do you discover the road blocked. So, suggest you mark this one off your list of things to see along the James river unless you are in for a nice hike into the fort from the closed road- probably less than a mile. Would be nice if the county [Isle of wight] would indicate at Rt 10 the entrance road was closed

We had a wonderful guide that gave us the historical background of the fort. I would say that a guide is necessary to enjoy a trip to the fort.
