Visited the Barnes Museum on a Friday afternoon. They open at 1 PM. Was greeted by Joann a wonderful docent. We spent about an hour. She told us the story of they family who lived there. A wonderful collection of furniture, clothes, glassware and many interesting items. We loved it.Don't miss a piece of history right in Southington.
It is amazing what a family could collect over the years, especially one that apparently never threw anything out.
The Barnes Museum is an amazing historical home that is fully furnished with items that belonged to the three generations of the Bradley-Barnes family. It was build in 1836 and has amazing displays of clothing, hats, photographs and much, much more.Paintings by Leila Barnes, the last lady of the house, are on display throughout the museum. The extensive grounds include a Victorian style garden created by a local Eagle Scout. Fascinating look back at local history.
Beautiful old home, well-restored. Lots of period pieces, old photos, etc. Good parking across the street.
Rich in towns history with lots to see. This little gem is right downtown and worth the trip. Stop for a cupcake around the corner or a coffee down Center Street. Enjoy the museums many themed events!
They have done a nice job of preserving history right on Route 10. Period artifacts are displayed throughout the home in an interesting way to keep you entertained. The guide is very friendly and informative. A nice way to spend an afternoon!
For more than 20 years I have driven or walked past the Barnes Museum but I'd never ventured inside until now. Actually I was at the property to enjoy the "Taste of Southington" annual event and the museum was open at no charge. As was stated earlier, it might be of more significance if it had belonged to someone famous outside of Southington but that doesn't detract whatsoever from its grandeur. A three story home (two floors are open) completely furnished in original items of the period. Not only did the Bradley and Barnes family never throw anything out, they even cataloged each item in the house with purchase information, etc. An old Pianola, kitchen appliances, beds, toys and even toilets remain in much the condition they were when they were made. Even clothing remains intact. The normal admission is only $5 and if you can, make an afternoon out of it and visit one of the great local restaurants around the corner on Center Street; in season most have outdoor dining.
If this house had been owned by someone famous, it would get more attention. It belongs to the local historical society and is open limited hours, so check! The house was built in 1836 and was owned by the Barnes/Bradley family until 1973. They never threw anything away and it shows. There's a large collection of pressed and cut glass goblets, 19th century toys, clothing and accessories and household goods. The house is superbly decorated in period style and is especially grand at Christmas. We live a few miles from this place and kept meaning to go. It's worth a trip from a few hours away just to visit. We have visited many house museums all over the world and this one is among the best.Downtown Southington is nearby with several small shops and restaurants. We will return in the summer to see what they have then.
