The trail is quite steep and challenging, but the terrain is so varied that it is worth the trip. The trail is a one-mile loop, but is almost never flat, so it takes a while. At the base of one of the bluffs, there are icicles from top to bottom (a hundred feet?) and so many beautiful portions of the trail along the creek (you will cross it many times, don't go after the rain without boots). There were a few icy spots on the trail in the morning and rocks and roots along the trail, and in a few places, it is hard to see where the trail is, but it is so worth the effort!
Thanks to one of the locals in Sainte Genevieve, we decided to check out Hickory Canyons to finish up the last day of our weekend getaway. We had been talking to the local shop owner about our drive up here from Memphis to escape the rain and hike Hahn State Park. He suggested we go to Hickory Canyons if we wanted to see some good waterfalls. We googled it and found our way there. It isn't too far from Hahn State Park. There are two trails to take. We decided to do both, even though it was raining. What better time to see a waterfall, right? The first trail was shorter and very easy, and dead ended at a beautiful waterfall. The second trail was longer, and went in a loop. It required crossing the creek a couple of times which was doable, but moving pretty quickly with all the rain. It was a spectacular hike and I recommend it to any outdoor lover.
