One thing that my husband is known for among my friends and family is that he is a great gift giver. He is super thoughtful and has no problem picking out a pair of flats or a purse for me. So when our first anniversary was approaching, I was expecting something incredible. He likes to keep a secret, so a day before we were planning to celebrate I received a midday email with the itinerary. It read, “9:30am depart for surprise, 10am arrive at surprise, 11:30am return from surprise”. I am not good at surprises, I want to know everything, so I immediately started going through ideas with my colleagues. Well the surprise turned out better than I expected. We got engaged in Detroit, spend a lot of time exploring, and love the city and all it has to offer, so it was only fitting that we take a helicopter ride with Magnum Helicopters out of Waterford to Downtown Detroit… complete with the awesome headset.Magnum Helicopters doesn’t just specialize in tours, they also offer flight training and photography. For a maximum of three passengers to enjoy about an hour tour from Waterford to Detroit, it costs $535. You can also customize a tour for three passengers and go anywhere you would like that is within a 25 nautical mile radius of Oakland County International Airport for $600 an hour.Not only was I nervous about the uncertainty of getting in a helicopter for the first time, it was also kind of a windy day. As I buckled in and we headed up, my stomach dropping soon turned into overwhelming excitement. We see the streets that we drive daily, but it was incredible to see it from above, especially the city. We looped around and saw all the well known landmarks (Ren. Cen, Campus Martius, Belle Isle, the stadiums, and the Packard Plant to name a few) and took some great pictures. Our pilot was also very knowledgeable and gave us some facts that we didn’t know which added to the experience. On the way back, we asked him to take a route that would allow us to pass over our house and the surroundings. Overall, it was a morning I will never forget. Magnum Helicopter tours would be great for a celebration like an anniversary, an activity for out of towners, someone who loves photography, or simply loves the city as much as we do. Incredible ride, the pilot (Jim) made the experience come alive with his commentary and knowledge of Oahu . Only one negative comment there needs to be proper steps to get into the helicopter
