The Indiana War Memorial is an awe inspiring facility. It took my breath away when I walked into the Memorial Room.
If you love history, then you would enjoy visiting this war memorial. It tells a lot about our history.
The artistry of the various sculptures and reliefs is amazing. Look closely into every detail, or just sit on the steps with a cup of coffee and enjoy. A great downtown spot for a quick outdoor meeting or people watching.
It was a little difficult to locate and you needed to walk a bit to get to it, but it was worth the effort. Very small memorial, but interesting.
The Memorial has long been one of my favorite places in the city. I have never been here and had to contend with a crowd. I think the folks who come to the Memorial MEAN to be there. They WANT to be there. Many of them are veterans, and you just feel the pride, the buried emotions and memories resonating in every room. This is a somber place, and with reason. This is a place that honors those who have served / are serving, those who have given all, and those who have lost all.If you go, you absolutely MUST spend a few moments of reflection in the Shrine Room.I don't know that this is a place to take young children -- due to the nature and atmosphere, but I think the older kids would be fine, and would likely come out having learned something. Please visit and pay respect to those who have answered the call.Semper Fi
Had a great time and learned so much by spending the day here. It is a great place to learn more about the true American hero's that we owe so much to.
The Indiana War Memorial is located in historical downtown Indianapolis on the War Memorial Plaza. The memorial was built after World War I (1923) to commemorate the valor and service of Hoosier veterans. The grand building is built in Neoclassical Style and is a grand presence on the mall north of University Park and south of Veterans Memorial Plaza. Before entering the memorial make sure that you check out and explore the intricate and beautiful exterior. The Indiana War Memorial is 210 feet tall and its dimensions are 270 feet long by 180 feet wide. The building has a steel frame with poured concrete clad in Indiana limestone. Be sure to look at the detail and the carvings in the limestone. The carved limestone lions, massive urns, and stars/pillars are located on all four sides. The bronze grated windows hold beautiful stained glass (best viewed from inside). Above the columns is a frieze with six large sculpted figures representing, from left to right: Courage, Memory, Peace, Victory, Liberty, and Patriotism. The 24 foot high statue Pro Patria guards the back of the building to the south. The main entrance is on Michigan Street. Once inside pick up one of the self guided tour books and enjoy your visit. First enjoy a museum that spans The American Revolutionary war, Battle of Tippecanoe, War of 1812, Spanish American War, The American Civil War, World War I, World War II, Korean War, Vietnam War, Cold War, Persian Gulf, Operation Dessert Storm and today's modern conflicts. This museum is a wonderful overview of artifacts, facts and figures as well as costumes and displays to keep your interest for a good hour or more.Next, tour the Pershing Auditorium and the amazing Shrine Room. I wish that I had known about the interior of this amazing memorial. I have lived here for 26 years and never went inside. I am glad that I finally did!
Great place to walk around and visit anytime of the year. Amazing monuments to share with friends and family in Downtown Indianapolis. Also a great place to view the July 4th fireworks from.
This is a nice afternoon walk. I did it in the afternoon in January, it was sunny & brisk. Make sure you go all the way down to the USS Indianapolis memorial. Very moving.
That Indiana war memorial was a very impressive sight from a distance. When you get up close it is even more impressive. The grounds were also very clean. The gold doors and the statue are definitely a sight to see.
Large museum with a lot of exhibits and artifacts. Most areas are well laid out and informative. Some exhibits did a poor job on mannequins. Overall, the exhibits were great with a lot of history and very informative. Easily spend several hours touring. Building interior is very beautiful. All for a great price (free)!
It was calm enough and temperate enough to walk around the memorial. Several interesting tribute statutes, well worth seeing. You'll really have to walk to get the full effect.
It's really deceptive looking at the building from the outside, you would never guess just how much is inside. Looking at the building from the outside, you see a pretty impressive monument, but inside you find one of the most impressive museums of American history outside of the Smithsonian.I've been to many museums of American history, the Indiana War Memorial is one of the most impressive collections of not just war artifacts, but history in general, I have seen outside of the Smithsonian in Washington, DC.
place to visit and a sad account of our wars to date i am not a big fan of war it has no friend but the undertaker and is nothing but a widowmaker
The building was just gorg- really something to see. The exterior of the building is nice but the inside is from a different era and has been maintained perfectly. A must see.
