This museum is NOT family friendly. The staff are not accommodating. The staff are rude. Today was my first time visiting and I will not be returning. My friend, our 3 children and I were basically chased out of the museum today because we were eating a snack in spare room. We asked for permission from the front desk staff, but another staff took issue with it. We were the only people in the entire museum, aside from staff. We were not making a mess or bothering anyone. They made us leave the spare room because they were having a tour or something in 3 1/2 hours. Nonsense! You'd think they would be happy to have visitors, but apparently not. 0/10, would not recommend.
I have visited the AMA for 3 years with my children. We normally go and explore, then have a snack, then explore some more. We have always had a lovely time and the staff has always been helpful and encouraging. Until today. The staff that we saw there today were unfamiliar to us. We entered the museum and put our snacks down where we normally eat, and then explored. The children were ready for snacks and we sat down to eat. An older heavy woman with a blonde ponytail and came in and lectured us about eating in the room (where we have done so for years) and that they were scheduled to have a group in there later and didn't want it dirty. I asked what time the group was scheduled and she said 3:30 (it was 12 when we were snacking). The children were done and so headed out to the gift shop. She rudely told the other mother that they need to be supervised. I cleaned up snacks while the other mother supervised the children. We were the only people in the entire museum. I can't imagine why the staff would be so rude to 2 nice families who were the only patrons in the museum. I had previously recommended the AMA to friends as a great place to take kids. NO MORE! These staff are NOT kid friendly. I am incredibly disappointed that one of my places to go with the kids is now off limits, due to staff who don't know the meaning of customer service.
Nice little place to visit. I think admission was a dollar or two. Pack up the kids and check out some model aircraft. Try out the simulators.
The RC planes and pilots were fun! The air show at noon was amazing. The jet that flew acrobatics to Born In the USA brought tears to my eyes. The veteran paratroopers landing with the POW, Indiana State and American flags was breath-taking. GREAT EVENT!
Use to fly radio control planes so I thought I would visit. Really interesting place to spend an afternoon at. Just like a miniature airport actually. I highly suggest that anyone who is interested in visiting this place should do so.
I think this is still a hidden gem to many of the locals. People come from all over the world though for the many events held here each year. Great family fun.
This is a surprisingly entertaining find on the southeast edge of Muncie. Wendy was the enthusiastic and knowledgeable worker who welcomed us. Model planes are suspended from the ceiling throughout and the display cases are filled with a variety of models and model memorabilia. It’s all very well organized, with many different scales and types represented. There is an extensive displays of model engines and a research library. Any Baby Boomer who has built model planes will appreciate the 1950s model store re-created in the museum. There are display cases filled with old model kits and all the glues, paints, and other accessories that allowances were spent on. In our two hours there we watched the video which is a bit dated but still informative and enjoyable.
Took my 2 year old son in December 2013. He was free and I was only $3. It is very difficult to find a better deal than that. Great inside activity. My son loved the hands on room. They had a gift shop where you can buy the model airplane wood kit. We bought one for $1.06 and was worth every penny.
In July 2011 myself and my Dad attended an AMA flying event and went through the AMA museum. I am a AMA member and a regular flyer of RC airplanes, when my Dad was young he also was into flying & building model airplanes so I decided to take him to a flying event at the AMA Museum/Headquarters, we both had a great time. I recommend anyone, young or old, interested in flight to go through the AMA museum.
If you build or have ever built model airplanes then you must visit the AMA museum. If you have a model, bring one to fly, they have the best field in the country.Every year I go there to participate in the National Championships. And each year I always discover something new in the museum. When passing through Muncie, IN stop in and enjoy the facility.
For a couple bucks, worth the stop. The ceilings are covered with historical model aircraft. Throughout you can check out different types of model aircraft, play with an interactive center in the back, watch videos, etc... In the center of the museum, they recreated a 1950s hobby shop. Overall geared more toward those who enjoy or grew up with model aviation. Even If some in your party doesn't have an interested in model aviation, they'll still find some neat exhibits.
This place is stuffed with artifacts. You can follow model avaiation from the beginnings and some of the stuff on exhibit probably tell the future of aviation.Admission is cheap and goes right back into running the museum. If you need to fill a couple of hours and have a fascination with aviation, this is a stop for you.
