rose hill plantation state historic site

Rose Hill may be a small plantation but it is something to see. I was very impressed with the history behind this plantation. I rate it high as any other place in SC.

The tour is well worth the $5.00. I saw other reviews mentioning $25.00? That must have been for a special event. It's free to walk the grounds, but to tour the house it is $5.00 and lasts about 45 minutes. The tour guide was really knowledgeable. I've lived near here almost all my life and have never seen this place. It was amazing and very peaceful this time of year.

Just got back from a visit to Rose Hill. Excellent tour guide, my thanks to Ms. Moses. house and grounds really give a feel of how life was lived during that time. Don't expect the grand scale of some of the Charleston plantations, but well worth the trip.

Do not skip a visit to this local historic site. The garden makes a pleasant walk any time of the year.

Husband and I stopped here on our way down to Savannah. As some others have indicated, this is in the middle of nowhere. I asked the NPS guide about this. She indicated that the place had not always looked like this-at one time there were many, many acres of cultivated fields, but the land has since been restored to piney woods, and is a national forest.As we approached the house we observed the Gist family cemetery, but did not stop to see it. You can't really miss it-there is a sign notifying drivers, and it is surrounded by an iron fence The house is nice, and the stories that the guide offered were interesting. This writer asked her if she had experienced any supernatural activities, and she said that she had not. It did not appear that the other NPS workers had either-at least our guide did no insinuate that others had.Unfortunately the house is NOT equipped to accomodate anyone that is in a wheelchair. The grounds are accessible, however, and there is no fee to enjoy them.At only $5.00 a person, it is well worth the money. The grounds are lovely with numerous flowering shrubs and trees, and there is a formal garden too. Some other outbuilding have been moved to this site, so there is more than just the main house to visit. There is also a tiny gift shop/NPS office where one can buy souveniers.

Our family took a field trip to Rose Hill Plantation and really enjoyed it. Currently the loop trail is closed because of fallen trees, so I would encourage visitors to plan to tour the house (currently a cost of $5 per adult) or there really isn't much to see or do. The home is lovely and is apparently constantly undergoing improvements to restore it to the way it was prior to the Civil War. Our guide was quite pleasant, knowledgeable, and in no hurry, encouraging our questions. The house tour took nearly an hour and was very interesting. Well worth five dollars. Highly recommended for history buffs.I appreciated the guide's consistent references to "enslaved people" rather than just "slaves" in her talk. A good reminder that these were human beings enslaved against their will--simply calling them "slaves" seems dehumanizing in some way.The tour was great for my wife and our teenage sons and me; I would not recommend the tour for small children, who would be likely to find it boring to stand around and listen for 45 minutes or longer.As an added bonus, ask about visiting the Gist family cemetery about a mile drive from the entrance to the plantation.

Very knowledgable and friendly tour guide. Pleasant grounds. We had to be somewhere later or would have enjoyed more time there. Will go back when weather cools off.

This place is incredible. I've been going here with my family ever since I was young, and it's never lost its appeal yet. I used to always love the re-enactments they would have here (I'm not sure they have them here anymore) and always loved the house tour. I recently took my sister's engagement photos out here, and it was the first time we'd been on the house tour in probably ten years. The ranger was incredibly knowledgeable and a great guy and we loved the revamped tour. Beautiful place with a nice little nature trail (and a few geocaches). A great part of history to have nearby.

This is a beautifully preserved jewel of South Carolina history. Be prepared to spend several hours wandering and learning.

Spent the day wandering around South Carolina geocaching and our adventures led us here. It is a beautiful property. We didn't get to go inside as we were there later in the afternoon after the tours had already run. The fall colors are stunning. The rose gardens look and smell beautiful and the restoration of the property is well done. Beautiful big old trees everywhere. It is a little off the beaten path but worth the drive and yes there is a geocache on the property.

This is a great day trip for anyone in the area. The house is beautifully renovated and filled with great antiques. So glad it wasn't used as target practice during WWII. It is also a beautiful drive through the forest, especially at this time of year.

Well done restoration, a bit hard top find but a nice back roads trip. Knowledgeable tour guide, few, if any, others visiting. Good condition back roads, in the middle of "nowhere" (Sumpter National Forrest), but not far from Newberry and Union, but pleasant towns as part of a day's tour of the midlands

it was just okay, would not visit it again. once was enough in a life time. just would not want to waste anymore time. better things to do on a rainy day.
