This is a absolutely great site to visit for anyone interested in period North Dakota architecture. Many small bits of information were readily shared by our guide. It was rather obvious that she loved the ol' mansion and her job. The carriage house is also very interesting. An excellent job was done in restoring this jewel in Bismarck.

This house served as the Governor's mansion until 1960. It served as the residence for 20 chief executives and maintains many of the furniture from that era. Today the house is also used for weddings and other special occasions. No charge for this tour and takes less than one hour. Well worth the time.

I've visited Bismarck several times, but never stopped to visit this mansion. Compared to other restored houses from this area and from other places this isn't worth your time. The outside is the best part.

Awesome staff, very well done, easy parking and lots of pics of governors. Even how the house was exchanged from private ownership to state ownership even better. The carriage house was so cool. Everything in the house has a story from the maid's step down room to the sliding doors. It's free unlike other former governor's mansions!

Beautifully maintained with period furnishings, and the walls are adorned with photos and biographical sketches of former governors. The adjoining carriage house contained many items of interest, complete with several photos blown up to near life size, of old Bismarck.

a great sampling of the history of North Dakota and their governors and families. The authentic, original decor was interesting.Tucked in a residential neighborhood but easy to find and leisurely to walk through.

We found the mansion to be a delightful surprise - a location not originally on our itinerary. We are so glad we made the time to stop in. The guide from the state historical society was knowledgeable and friendly, adding great color commentary to the experience. The interior provides a window into be home life of North Dakota's early governors. In addition, a gallery of these governors, spread throughout the house, provides background and insight into their times in office. The most fascinating point of interest was the care taken to show how the interior decoration had changed over time. In each room, they have preserved parts of the walls, ceilings, and door frames showing each of the paint colors and wallpapers that had been used in the house since it was built. This is definitely worth a stop when you're in Bismarck.

This 1884 Queen Anne-style home has housed 21 former chief executives. It contains unimpressive original furniture and portraits. The grounds are well kept. Our only reason for visiting was the lack of other sights in this area.

To walk around the former Governor's home is awesome. To think the Governor, the high official of ND, lived simply and within easy access to anyone. No fences, guards etc. just simple life in a community. Would that all the world could live that way today!

If you enjoy touring older homes, this is a nice tour. My boyfriend and I went with my parents. Enjoyed reading some of the stories and seeing the different wallpapers that were used. We went during their annual Ice Cream Social, so there were activities in the front lawn and free ice cream and hotdogs. There was not a fee to go on the day we went. If you go, make sure to walk through the Carriage House and read the Ten Commandments of Driving published in 1925.
