The Forest Service writes:"An easy ¼ mile walk to unusual geologic formation with spectacular views of basalt columns. Beautiful newly improved accessible trails just opened. Improvements made that addressed the requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act and funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA). We invite everyone to enjoy this unique geological formation and interesting interpretive trail."We enjoyed it. Easy walk.Directions: Next to Pigeon Flat Campground 24 miles east of Pinecrest on Highway 108.
So this is what the trees were like before logging. Its nce to see how things were before everything got cut down 100 years ago. Glad they kept this area intact.
I go to Column of the Giants often when I'm going up for an overnight camp at Sonora Pass with family. It's a nice little hike and the slabs of rock are pretty cool. If you're in the area, it's worth a visit. Note* If you've ever visited Devil's Postpile in Mammoth, it quite the same, just a bit smaller
Not far from the road. I think its accessible in the late spring, summer and fall. Check on winter. Make sure you bring a pack with snacks and plenty of water. The rock forms are neat to see.
Stop and give yourself a welcome break enjoying this sight.. Not worth a special trip, given how many stunning places are so close, but worth a stop if you are in the area. If you are relaxing, take a chair and settle down with a book and enjoy.
