palotai vineyard & winery

Palotai is a very small, very informal winery that makes a nice contrast to some of the more commercial wineriesin the South Umpqua Valley AVA, but it is worth the detour. They are keeping alive the Hungarian tradition of winemaking, including their incomparable version of the legendary Bull's Blood red blend. There are many others in the area who attempt this blend; Palotai is the original - accept no substitutes. The hosts are knowledgeable and great characters. In addition, the grounds have a picnic area overlooking the N. Umpqua River. Just don't be fooled by their neighbor's sculptures of Canada geese on your way into the winery - they're very realistic but just slightly too large. The neighbor's odd sense of humor fits right in with the overall vibe of this excellent but very low-key winery. Highly recommended.
