A fascinating collection of all kinds of historical artifacts in an interesting setting. When Klamath County acquired the building it came with decades of accumulated stuff, and more has been added over the years. There is lots to see, and the tour guides do a great job of making it interesting to everyone. There are few historical hotels from this period that are preserved as they were back in the day - this one shows what the typical traveler to a small town could expect in the early 20th century when it came to lodging. The only downside is that the Baldwin is only open in the Summer holiday season - don't miss it or the other two museums in the Klamath County Museum System.
So very much to see.....interesting displays.....many times there is a docent to relay the history of what the articles were used for.....many old rooms to peruse and to be able to visualize how people lived in the early days.....they got along with small spaces and not many extras like we have today. The building itself is full of history.....Just down the street and over the bridge is the Favell Museum, which is privately owned.....the original owner was a major collector....lots of Native American articles, paintings, baskets, and the gift shop is top notch!!! Don't miss either of these museums. Also in the same area is our Veteran's Park and Memorial with bricks purchased by and for Veterans of all the services.....worth a look see! You could also have a picnic there in the shade of some old trees.
I was lucky enough to grow up down the street from this wonderful place, back when there were a few old-timers still living in the upper floors, and I still love to visit. This is a small-town gem, where tours are often one-on-one and teach you so much more than an impersonal big-town museum. Hours are sporadic because it's mostly a labor of love done by one or two people, so be patient--it's worth it. Highlights include the basement cupboards that open directly on the basalt bedrock that anchors the building (preserving it unscathed through the recent earthquakes), and the colored transom glass that's thicker on bottom than top due to years of settling (glass is an incredibly slow-moving liquid, after all). And it's just a couple blocks from the Link River Trail, so you can couple your architectural history with some natural history.
The people are so great and know alot of the history of the Klamath Falls area and about the items in the museum. I could spend hours and hours there and still not see everything.
Great old building, interesting displays and rooms, and so much history. The admission price is reasonable. When you are done, cross the street to the Veteran's Park and check out the veteran's memorial.
