We were enjoying a trip thru Oregon's wine country and The Abbey was near where we were staying. It is not that long a trip from 99W up a hill to where the Abbey buildings are located. The gardens are beautifully maintained and still lovely even though it is Fall here. The chapel is lovely with it's maple colored woodwork. We wandered around the property--near the chapel is a pond which you can walk around. On the far side is a sign which caused us to chuckle--"Walking on water prohibited. Monks only." The gift shop is well-stocked and we came home with a small chunk of their famous fruitcake. It's pretty good, rich so you can't really load up on it. It's worth a visit.
We attended vespers at the abbeys. The setting of the abbey is pastoral, the church is new, light and airy and looks out on the fields It was so peaceful and welcoming to first sit in silence and wait as the monks filed into the choir stalls,The prayers are chanted and there are a Couple of readings. The whole service lasts less than 30 minutes. It was a beautiful experience. Even as a non-catholic I felt comfortable. You just sit and soak it in.
Near Lobenhaus B & B and worth a visit if you enjoy quiet places for walking, spiritual reflection, and perusing spiritual books in the abbey bookstore. One can also purchase the noteworthy Trappist Abbey fruitcake and other food items.
Gift shop is nice. lovely but simple little church and grounds with a pond. rooms for only $50.00. The monks have a huge warehouse where they keep wine for the surrounding wineries. Also do book binding on a wide basis. We enjoyed this quiet stop.
We enjoyed hiking to the shrine. The trails are not particularly well marked but we managed to find our way there and back. Lovely spot.
