you need to read everything offered you about the mansion and the owners. the lives of the Marland's is worthy of a movie. Decadent, tasteful, wonderfully built and exquisitely furnished. A unique peek at the lifestyles of the extremely wealthy of the time. the story of this family at it's highs and lows is quite exceptional. the woodwork on the walls and art decorating the ceilings is worth the price of admission. try to go on a nice day so you can walk the grounds. we did the self-guided tour. it was very well laid out with good descriptions of each room. the door light switches on the closet and the master bathroom are very neat.
Had a guided tour with other folks/tourists. Did quite a bit of walking and climbing stairs so be prepared. There is handicapped access so don't be afraid on that account. The mansion itself is a wonderful exhibit of wealth, some decadence and usually good taste. There are several levels and each is a treat. The sometimes sad sometimes scandalous story of Mr. Marland's life and family is fascinating. At certain times of the year, there are amateur actors who portray the individuals right down to period costumes and they will interact with the tour group, which is fun. Cost is low for out of towners, but Ponca City residents can go in for free. The mansion is used for meetings, weddings and many benefit events for children, etc.
The staff at the estate were extremely nice. We were allowed to visit without a guide, as they were just that trusting. Many museum pieces were sitting out and easily accessed, so I trusted that they trusted me and my party. The history of this place is exceptional. Definitely worth a visit.
We attended a Saturday Christmas open house with a beautiful tour that lasted over two hours. I think these tours are usually on weekdays. Taking my time, I managed the stairs for the mansion's three stories. But there was an elevator--and even a wheelchair to borrow The guide was enthusiastic in recounting the family story and pointing out details. She could also handle questions well. In a couple areas, the tour went around or through preparations for a wedding that evening, but our guide didn't let us miss much. We had not visited in maybe 25 years and were pleased to see more of the 55 rooms well furnished (with the extra treat of Christmas decorations) as well as to be taken out through the tunnel to visit Leidie's cottage. Definitely want to go back for a grounds tour in the spring.
The story of EW Marland is intriguing and sad at the same time. The mansion itself is awesome. Although very well preserved, it had to be amazing when new. There are both guided and self-guided tours available and the admission price is minimal. Well worth the time if you are in the area and a fan of the old oil baron days.
It is called the Palace on the Prairie. A beautiful Italian style mansion from the 1920's. Built by the founder of Marland OIl which later became Conoco OIl. The grounds are amazing as is the history surrounding it.
Ponca City is a fun place with everything close to the Holiday Inn Express. Marland Mansion is not to be missed along with the Pioneer Women's Museum.
We arrived not too long before they were closing so they let us walk through for free. If we had known the price we probably wouldn't have come. But I'm glad we did. The house is amazing and the story behind it is incredible!
This is a great home a must see if your in the area love to explore the house and grounds a real treasure to see.
We have been here a couple of times and have done the guided tour and the self guided. They are both very good. The main benefit to the guided is learning a lot of facts about the place and getting to go through the secret tunnel from the mansion to the out buildings. The grounds are gorgeous and the mansion is very well maintained. It is a great place to spend a few hours.
David is the Executive Director and was great to work with as we booked the trip. Our guide was Marilyn and she was knowledgable and informative. We had lunch catered there in the mansion which was an added experience. Because our group had such an interest in the estate, Marilyn was able to add so much to our tour. If you are interested in history and beautiful mansions, it is a great stop. You will need at least 2 hours to do it justice.
My granddaughter and I went to this beautiful historic old home this month we take lots of short trips when ever we can. Well worth taking the guided tour because you get to see more things and get more information than on self guided really cool place to take kids.
Beautiful grounds and the mansion is amazing. The curators are very iinformative and enthusiastic. The grounds and the mansion itself are used for local events such as the high school promenade, weddings, the Ponca City Arts and many other functions. An excellent grand place to hold a special event.
We took the self-guided tour of the mansion, but the manager, David, ended up showing us some of the estate in an impromptu, personalized tour. It made our visit all the more special. The mansion and estate are breathtaking - there's no other way to put it. While vacationing in Oklahoma, the Marland Estate is well worth adding to your plans. It's amazing!
I have enjoyed the interior of this museum and was excited to see well preserved decoration and house appliance. This house is similar to those you can see in films like Jeeves and Wooster. However, the staff ruined all positive viewing experience. Thick rough man - the guide was very unpleasant and even rude. I was thinking of him many hours after I left the museum.
