We loved the Almendres Cromlech and considered it a highly worthwhile trip. However, on our way out we discovered that someone had broken into our locked car and stolen almost everything. We were visiting the site on our way out of Evora, so our suitcases were all in the trunk. The parking lot is just far enough away from the site that you cannot keep an eye on the car. We were only gone for about 20 minutes and we appeared to be alone. When we reported everything to the police they said they were having a regular problem with that site. However, there is no sign to warn visitors and our hotel in Evora was unaware of the problem. According to the police and from our own experience the thefts are not targeting people, only unattended cars. If you're headed out here, either leave someone with your car or leave all your belongings back at the hotel.

Seeing this construction is really nice. Its a great place to go out and do a picnic near it. It will take aproximatelly 7 minutes to reach the place by car on a dirt road. You will enjoy it, if you like history or not. It will take 100 meters by foot on a dirt road.If you have low mobility, you can reach the place with a heel chair because the road from the park to the Cromlech is good.

I was nearly put off going when our guidebook said it was difficult to find without a guided tour-- it's not! Good signage gets you there no problem. After you park there is still a bit of walking over some uneven territory but it is well worth it. Adjacent properties have lots of cork trees, one even had black pigs running around! When you reach the "stones" and see the way that they are laid out you can only marvel at how (and why!) this was set up 6 to 8 thousand years ago!! Extremely thought provoking!

I would have missed so much about the history and significance of this place without Mario of Ebora Megalith Tours. He loves these places and is an archeologist so don't waste your time driving out there and looking. Go with Mario! His tours are #1 activity in Evora.

If you happen to be in the Evora area, this is a nice place to visit as it's free (yay!) but a bit inaccessible unless you have your own transport. It's nice and quiet and devoid of crowds of tourists.As others have said this is similar to Stonehenge in England but the stones here are much smaller. You can't touch the stones at Stonehenge but many do it here though this is forbidden in signs at the entrance but many ignore it (a quick side note to travellers that if you want to see Stonehenge size stones that you can touch while in England, go to Avebury). Though the stones here are small, there is a massive menhir situated about 2kms before this place . Look for the signs that say Menir dos Almendres.

A truly magical place that is a MUST VISIT if you are in Evora. There is no entrance fee and you can freely go around the stones, touch them, make pictures and enjoy the site. Also a plus was that we saw a couple of policemen or park rangers that were there to make sure everything is okay.Since we didn't have our own car, we asked in the Tourist office of Evora how to get there and they proposed either we go by taxi or a company that takes you there for 25€. We were 2 friends so the taxi was cheaper, 30€ for Evora-Cromlech-Evora and the guy said he'd wait for as long as we wanted there.

we spent a day visiting the neolithic sites around Evora and this is a high point. Far better than Stonehenge in that you can wander around the stones and get close to them.

These Cromlechs are well preserved and you can walk around them without any problem. I would love to visit again at night during a full moon.

This is quite a large site of menhirs, the largest in Portugal with close to 100. Some of them have carvings, although we could only find one where you can still see a circle carved out. This site is supposed to be 7000 years old and its function is not known, but some research suggests it had to do with the placement of the sun and the moon. Whatever it may was, the artists had to have the time and leisure to create this. It gave me an incredible feeling to stand in the middle of this circle. Try to allow for some inner peace and let the place speak to you. This was an incredible experience for me.

The Almendres Cromlech is a relatively large, ancient complex of appox. 100 medium sized megaliths, that was erected in a circular/horshoe-like fashion some 4,000 - 5,000 years ago> The site is right outside Evora and well worth visiting...

Place is wonderful. However, the site is quite small, so it is better be prepared either spiritually or historically, or to have a good guide, to be able to get the most out of this visit.We've visited this place as a part of the Viatour day trip from Lisbon to Evora. Great experience, highly recommended.

From the main squire you can take a taxi to go to the almendres cromlech.the price is about 40 euros for an hour.

A visit to the megalithic sites in the Evora area was right at the top of my list of things to do in my three weeks in Portugal. Like a number of other people posting here, I would highly recommend hiring (at very reasonable rates) a guide--in my case the very knowledgeable and friendly Mario Carvalho of Ebora Megalithica. It really makes a world of difference to have a local archeologist on hand to explain the history and cultural significance of the sites. And they'll worry about the driving for you as well.The site was astonishing to me. From about 5500 BC. Mind boggling to stand on the same ground as the people who erected these stones. Being in among the stones and Mario's detailed explanations were a trip back through time. Unforgettable. And hugely recommended.

We were told that these stones were only discovered in the late 1960s. Amazing. The route from Evora is well marked, about 20 minutes out. The day before we went, there had been a heavy rainfall, and we encountered a large puddle. We were not prepared to drive our tiny rental car through so we walked the last 20 minutes to the site, which gave us a chance to really look around at the cork oaks and take in the distant scenery through the trees. The arrangement seems random, apparently it is believed they are oriented towards the rising sun. Whatever, just make time to go.

If you are visiting Evora it deserves the visit.Imagine a small stonehenge.It would be great if there was someone to explain the site, unfortunately there is no one; However if you are a tourist visiting Évora, i´m sure your knowledge about history and ancient cultures is above the average so you will enjoy the place and your mind will travel a few millenniums into the past. search for " cromeleque dos almendres"
