This museum looked quite small from the outside, so I was surprised to find myself lose several hours in there. The collections are fantastically put together- great variety and really well presented. My favourite was the Picture Stones, an exhibition of rune stones from several centuries ago. This museum is very absorbing, and painted a very vivid picture of Gotland's history.

My favorite exhibition is the Stoneage hedgehog-clothed women. So much knowledge and history here. Great for all ages but my kids got scared of the skeletons on the 2nd floor.

Excellent variety, well presented and explained (for those of us speaking/reading only in English!). A fantastic mix of art, history, archaeological pieces. A definite must, even for those not overly drawn to museums, this one will fascinate you - allow a couple of hours to really enjoy it. Reasonable price. (Sorry, did not notice if there were wheelchair or baby facilities, lockers etc)

After this museum you can see Gotland with understanding. Good descriptions in English and a complete history or why this island is different and worth your time to explore.

An unique Collection of gold- and silver treasures found on the Island. A very good display of rune-and picturestones from the bronzeage to the wikingage.A very good display about the development of the city of Wisby and the city wall (World heritage). The full story about the battle outside Wisby in 1361 ("Korsbetningen") when the Danes killed a very large number of mainly farmers from Gotland.

We saw several museums in Stockholm before traveling to the town of Visby on the island of Gotland and this was still the best we saw. Three floors of medieval and Viking artifacts. The first floor rune stones are wonderful. The price is reasonable and "kids" under the age of 20 are free. I would recommend at least a couple of hours here. You won't be sorry.

The best part of this museum for me were the explanations of what's written on the rune stones archaeologists frequently find on Gotland.

Visit to Gotlands Museum at Visby is a must for everyone interested in Nordic history. Take at least 2 hours to enjoy the three floors covering history from ancient times to the present. My favorites were the runic stones on the ground floor and rooms dedicated to medieval history.

From 11th century rune stones to 9000 year old skeletons, from a local love story to a summary of executions, this museum has something for everyone.

I'm fond of Viking stuff and cultural museum. After reading a great review about it, I made a note to visit this museum.Yes, it's a quite amazing museum! From Gotland fossils, Viking rune stone and artifacts (including the skeleton), medieval time - battle of Visby (I'm just glad I was not born in that time), and experience the cellar.Just be there and "lost in time" in the maze of Gotlands Museum.:)

Normally we would never have visited Visby but it was part of a cruise route. I was pleasantly suprised by this museum, as the rest of this town wasn't an exciting destination at all. In this museum you learn more about the vikings in an interesting manner. It's certainly worth a visit if you find yourself in Visby, but I can't honestly say that you should go to Visby at all.

Having been on a cruise around Scandinavia seeks information on the Vikings (and failing because exhibitions were on tour or museums closed), I was surprised to be pointed in the direction of this museum.Having purchased a replica 'viking' necklace at the local market, I was told to visit the museum to see the real thing. The museum was set over three floors, was well laid out and very accessible, with many descriptions also I. English. The viking section included the worlds largest haul of silver found in a local long house. It was fascinating. The rest of the museum was also good, well laid out and included many interesting facts and exhibits about Gotland.I'd love to visit again and can imagine this would keep kids busy for a fair while.

The must see attraction when you arrive on Gotland. This museum is a brilliant introduction to the wealth of history which exists in Visby and Gotland. Tourist infrastructure on Gotland is surprisingly lacking, given how significant the island was to the Vikings. Stock up on all the maps and books you need here before heading out into the countryside to burial sites and other historic delights. The picture stone hall has an amazing collection of monumental stones. Mythical animals and runes intertwine in complex patterns. Photography isn't allowed. Some of the stones date back to 400 AD. They hint at Vikings using sailing boats and often depict battles and Norse gods. Found all over Scandinavia - they are at their most concentrated in Gotland and this museum has the finest collection of all.

The museum has lots and lots to see. Good for all, adults and children will enjoy. The religious statues were very interesting and the stones dated way back in time, wow. I had read somewhere that the entrance was free but no, they are charging now.
