This museum contains a good collection of artifacts from southern Puglia and the city of Taranto displayed in a modern setting. It is something not well known, than I suggest to go there end get surprised
The marble sculptures are very imposing. They are huge in size, very accurate in depiction and we appreciated the antiquity . The work that was invested to cure the broken pieces and show to us the perfect result.
beautiful museum, but not very publicated. On a rainy Sunday afternoon we have been the only visitors. It's a pityRich and well exposed collection of Magna Grecia and roman period. Museum shop should be updated / see other museums in the world and staff ( more than 5 persons where badly engaged)
A lovely peaceful place where you can engage with the region's ancient past in Magna Grecia - so many artifacts that tell of people's lives - gold crafts, delicate earrings, children's toys..... I recommend a visit even if you are not usually keen on visiting museums!
Couldn't imagine how advanced was the technique of the jewellery, before the visit at MARTA Museum in Taranto. Mosaics too were amazing
Beautifully laid out and wonderfully understated. The history (long and very varied) of the area is told through the artefacts, most of which have been found locally. The exhibits date from around 400 BC and you can really get the sense of how much the area was invaded and under the control of different cultures in the following 1500 years. It's not cluttered and each piece is explained within the context of its period and chronology. The curator and staff have done an excellent job - this tourist isn't normally that interested in musea, but this one is worth a detour for!
You can read about history of Italy and Greece in books and newspapers but only in this place you can see and touch with real "past" and discover more info than you have expected.
The large number o exhibits from Greek and Roman times, that were recovered from tombs in the Necropolis under the town are astounding. There needs to be more recognition in tourist literature of this exhibition.
The archaeological museum in Taranto contains a large collection of artifacts from southern Puglia and the city of Taranto displayed in a modern setting within an old building five minutes walk from the Ponte Giravole. Spend and hour on a damp morning and be amazed. (pensioners get in free, this applies to most museums in Italy).
It not well known that Taranto is older than Rome but to see the precious artifacts, statues, and many gold coins/jewelry was wonderful to see.Not large by any means but interesting to go through.worth the 2 hrs to spend
Again a gem. Free entrance parking in front. Not many visitors. A beautiful collection of golden and other jewels. Objects of daily use , marble heads and torso's. Well exposed . Please go and visit ,it is nice and won't take much of your precious time.:-)
Not even a fifth of the original museum has been reopened to the public with all the major pieces missing but one still has to pay the full amount to enter. The explanation one gets is that the funds assigned have been diverted to another project! So what!? Very sad to see how italy is mismanaging its' heritage.
