I guess we went because we had just been to the POW camp but the cemetary was pretty lame. Nothing like other war cemeteries we have seen around the world. Just concrete curbing with name plaques, a small alter and a marker that's it. Not much to see at all.
Beautifully maintained and a great part of the breakout story - as was the Australian war cemetery next door.
Their are not many places in NSW with heavy WW2 history but Cowra offers a tasteful and sensitive look at the Prisoner Of War and Breakout experience. Highly recommend a weekend trip.
Not the usual place I would visit but it was lovely none the less ... Australian and Japanese graves adjacent to each other and a perfect place to learn about what happened in Cowra and to also reflect on those circumstances ....
The Japanese War Cemetery, has celebrated it's 50th year of opening in 2014.The interesting part of this cemetery is that it is the only official burial place that has the remains of actual Japanese soldiers, killed in the Cowra Breakout.A place of remembrance, and a place of respect to the fallen.
My two year old daughter and I just love coming to the gardens for a beautiful morning tea and to feed the ducks and fish just relaxing
It brought home to me the futility of war to see the graves of those who died that night of the breakout & shortly after.
A simple and small cemetery remembering the fallen Japanese. Well kept and serene.A short distance from the town centre. It is worth a visit to remember and understand a different time in the history of Australia.
A place to reflect on not only the brutality and stupidity of war but also the courage of individuals
A well cared for and respectful monument to a troubled time. You can't help but be moved by this cemetery.
So sad that so many men were separated from their families by war and died tragically for a cause they thought was right. The nobility of Australian spirit in preserving the site for descendants and others to visit is highly commendable.
It was good to see this space organised and maintained in such a respectful manner. For those who like myself don't know much about the Breakout it is worth a trip to the Visitor Information Centre before you attend. It was a very sad and moving place to go to, but worth the trip.
This is a lovely, well-cared for space which reflects a sad period in our history. Well worth a visit.
The only Japanese war cemetery outside of Japan. Very tastefully done and moving. This town is amazing considering the history of the Japanese and the Australians during WW II. This should be seen in combination with the site of the former POW camp.
The cemetery is situated in a peaceful, leafy setting & is well tended, although smaller than I expected. It's warming to note that we have treated the Japanese POW's remains with such respect. Our Aussie war dead are also buried nearby; & the general town cemetery adjoins. No probs with parking & trees offer plenty of shade.I suggest first stopping at the Cowra Tourist Info Centre to view the interesting 10 minute hologram to get a general background on the POW breakout. Get a map & the cemetery; the few remains of the POW camp (not much to be seen here but there was work being done on the site when we visited); & the Japanese Gardens can all be accessed along the same route. Perhaps end at the Garden's Café for lunch (no facilities at the other sites).
