What was once an imposing area with fabulous views (I know, I used to live there!) has been allowed to run down and is in a terrible state. The majority of the houses have been allowed to rot away and many are only just about standing. Only a few retain their former glory and the army has now taken over and fenced off some of the best views
It takes you back a few centuries and even without closing your eyes you can feel what it would have been like in the days of horses and carriages. Take a leisurely stroll around the streets and make sure to stop by Titchfield High School and fort. The cannon pointing out to sea reminds you that the English were determined to hang on to this gem of an island.
We stayed at a lovely guesthouse on Titchfield Hill. I loved living like the locals with no special frills. Miss Lorna is also a graet cook with the best breakfasts served.
Your view from Titchfield will be awesome as you are up higher that most of Port Antonio. It is a very historic area with rich and interesting stories. Stop and talk to the locals. Driving past Titchfield High School my sons found it very interesting to read the dress code posted on the entrance gate.
Went to church there. It was a warm and friendly experience. A very rural area, heard chickens in the yard of the church. They even invited us to their harvest later that week. We didnt stay so long unfortunately. Enjoyed it.
Some great old houses of a colonial nature, worth a walk round in the day time some good basic accommodation
The cute houses in the residential streets are cute, local feel and our driver got us on the school grounds to see the historic place (old fort) and told us all of the history! Very cool
I read a history book on Portland Parish and am amazed how fancy the Titchfield Peninsula used to be. I really enjoyed the energy of the area though. Real people, real life.
tichfield is a penninsula connected to the town of port antonio ..a neighborhood of small homes many reflecting period architecture of 200 years ago when banana exports made this the preferred location of the upper class..most of these homes are now rundown awaiting a promised rennaisance by jamaican billionaire michael lee chin..at the end of the penninsula is fort george fortified with cannons ..the scenery from this vantage point is stunning..for many years the fort has been home to titchfield high school..also on the bay side of the penninsula is a quiet bathing beach accessed thru the port antonio marina
