st. john's college

I walked through this beautiful campus while on a guided tour of Annapolis. The 36-acre Annapolis campus is in the heart of the historic capital of Maryland, on the Chesapeake Bay. St. John's College is a direct descendant of King William's School, founded in 1696. The present site of the college was proposed as early as 1761, making it one of the oldest institutions of higher learning in the United States.

The campus is beautiful, grassy acres, not too big, historic buildings, gardens are so lovely.We went on a Saturday so classes were not in session.But the campus is a great place to have a picnic on back campus, just past the last dormitory.

We were married in the meeting hall here over 20 years ago. Wonderful setting and very reasonable. American history you can experience for yourself.

Our daughter is a grad student at St. John's, so when we helped her move there a year ago and then visited her last week, she gave us a tour of the campus and the buildings she frequents. Just such a beautiful campus! She loves the education she's getting there - and although I can't speak to that, I know she's recommend it to anyone.

Well, my visit was special because I was with a young friend who was a student there. The personal tour always is the best, of course. But if you can arrange a visit of any sort, you will be impressed by the aura of the Great Book authors and the stately buildings on the campus. Students may engage you in philosophical discussion, as it what they live and breathe.

Being a parent of a "johnnie" would have influenced me if I needed to be influenced. This is academia and introspection in the form of higher education. The campus is very nice, and worth a look when in Annapolis. Frances Scott Key was an alumni, and be sure not to miss the annual croquet match between St. John's and the USNA (Johnnies almost always prevail) in April. SJC also holds events and lectures throughout the year that the public can attend. If your'e in town when the chorus performs, don't miss it. The entire audience (mostly current students and alumni) sing along. There are no professors at St. John's, just tutors, and the students attend small classes and seminars sitting around wooden tables rather than at desks. They address each other as Miss or Mr. and much of what they learn is based on discussion and the Great Books. Truly a unique institution. You might also want to check out a play put on by the students or the Mitchell Art gallery as well.

Beautiful campus. Certainly to be considered if I were a prospective student.Located in the historic center of town, walking distance to attractions and MANY restaurants, as well as waterfront.

Third oldest college in the country with terrific architecture to appreciate and hundred year old trees shading some rolling lawns right down to the creek. Quaint and compact

The grounds are interesting with the older buildings, but even though we had kids with us there were students using some pretty rough language. The students at the Naval Academy were much more polite.

Nice campus, close to USNA, in historic town. Less than 600 students, but campus feels larger

My son spent the night at St John's as a perspective student. My husband and I visited the college and met the administration and students. I think he found the best college!

Their curriculum may appeal to only a select few, but, WOW, what a great experience for those students looking for a fantastic education based on reading the "great books" from Western literature. Lovely campus too.

Go back to the Great Gatsby with the Annual St.Johns vs the Naval Academy Croquet match. Many dressed in perios costume and much fun. Great place to grab a spot for an impromptu picnic. Get Lunch at Potato valley on State Circle and walk over and picnic on the lawn. It doesn't get any better than this.
