My 12 year-old son and I had an amazing time on our tour. Our tour guide Robin was very informative and entertaining. My son was especially excited when she picked him to be the "dead body " of Mrs. Borden. We highly recommend it.
We arrived for the first tour on a Wednesday during school vacation. We were the only ones that had arrived. Our tour was jam packed with information. Our guide was excellent taking time to explain everything in a way that my 8 year old could understand! This tour was far more than I expected. I need to plan another trip back!
We have all sang the song about Lizzie Borden. This house walks you through the experience. Spooky!I understand they have overnight stays? Not for the faint of heart
My husband and I arrived just before noon last Friday in time for the first tour of the day. There was only one other couple with us, so it almost felt like we got a private tour! Our tour guide, Danielle, was friendly and easy to listen to as she introduced us to each room of the house and described the grisly murder scenes within on that sweltering day over a century ago. Not only was she highly knowledgeable about the details of the crime, she was well versed on the history of the house. The house itself is beautifully restored and furnished with absolutely pristine antiques that date back to the late 1800's. It was quite easy to imagine Lizzie and her sister Emma dressed in long dresses of the day, gliding down the curved staircase. Or Bridget the maid clearing the breakfast dishes, Mrs. Borden tending to her household and Mr. Borden reading the mail in the sitting room. There are numerous photos of the Borden family as well as others associated with the events displayed throughout the house. Even some of Lizzie's personal books are on the bookshelves. The tour is a good 45 minutes and worth every penny of the modest admission fee. There is plenty of parking behind the house and a gift shop in the "barn" on the premises. Danielle mentioned the Borden family gravesite is located at the nearby Oak Grove Cemetery, which we visited immediately following the house tour. Not much to see there but as it is part of the history and only a short drive from the house, we figured why not. I found it rather poignant that they are all buried together in the same plot. All in all, we enjoyed the experience and highly recommend a visit to the Lizzie Borden house.
We got there just in time for the first tour on a Saturday morning in mid-January and were the only ones; that worked out just fine. Our guide, Danielle, was poised, knowledgeable, pleasant, and a professional in every sense of the word. She covered the reams of information leaving us with very few questions -- a superb job we thought. The facts in a nutshell: Abby and Andrew Borden were hacked to death at their home, 92 Second Street (today no. 230) on the morning of Thursday, August 4, 1892; Abby, Andrew’s second wife, was killed sometime between 9am and 10:30am, and Andrew between 10:30am and 11:10am. The two other people in the house, daughter Lizzie and live-in maid Bridget Sullivan, heard nothing and saw nothing out of the ordinary. The elder daughter Emma was out of town and a relative who had been staying with the Bordens, Lizzie’s uncle John Morse, had left the house that morning to run several errands (all confirmed by eyewitnesses who placed him elsewhere during the crimes). No strangers were seen on or around the property and no one witnessed anything out of the ordinary. No murder weapon was ever found and no trace of blood or brains (both skulls were horribly crushed) were found anywhere in the house.Lizzie was arrested and in 1893 tried for the crimes. She was found not guilty. According to a statement made by one of the jurors years later, the evidence against her was weak and completely circumstantial (true). Still, the mind boggles, especially after visiting the house, to comprehend that not one but two terribly violent crimes were committed over the period of an hour or longer, without the knowledge of anyone in the same house. No one else was ever charged with the crime. After we left and headed to New Bedford for lunch we discussed this "enduring mystery" (as the Providence Journal called it in 2013) and it was the topic of conversation off and on for the next day or so.The tour lasts about 45-50 minutes and there is an admission fee. Parking is in the back of the house or on the street.
As a "serious" historian, I generally avoid sites that promise only to send up the sensational and macabre (see almost any place in Salem, Massachusetts), but with the relatively recent publication of a new book by the terrific folks at the Fall River Historical Society that seeks to place Lizzie Borden in the context of her Gilded Age world, we took a brief break from our Thanksgiving at home in Rhode Island to check out what Fall River had to offer. And, golly, were we surprised by the tour at the Lizzie Borden Bed & Breakfast. We were the first of the day and had a splendidly knowledgeable and engaging guide, Danielle. As someone who knows more than your average bear about the Borden case, I was waiting for some howlers but never once got one from her. The tour was well-paced, informative, and not a little entertaining, setting just the right tone for the sobriety of the underlying subject without being morbid or, frankly, start our day off on a major downer. Her facts were straight and presented, as we were guided through the house, in a way that led us to draw our own conclusions about what happened there that fateful morning--and not a single ghost story even mentioned (thanks heavens). Moreover, Danielle was patient enough to answer all of our questions clearly and with an admirable honesty (and given that my wife is a former crime reporter, that's saying something). Now, there are clearly some differences of opinion about what happened between the folks at the Lizzie Borden House and those at the Historical Society, but not in any kind of antagonistic way. In any case, it was well worth the visit and I highly recommend it. But be sure to ask for Danielle.
Very interesting and must see. I really enjoyed the tour. Fact or fiction,,,truth or folklore. In any case it is a fun visit but expensive.
We had an awesome time. I am a huge chicken when it comes to this stuff! I loved the way we were left alone at night to explore and get a true experience. There were some ghost hunters staying there the same night and they got something on their EVP. Highly recommend staying here! The staff was great!
We toured this museum in January, and we were well entertained. I had read some bad reviews, but our experience was very positive. The house definitely has a "feel" to it, I developed sudden nausea in the attic that I could not explain, it went away once I left that floor. Weird. The tour guides were knowledgeable and accommodating. We got there a few minutes late and the girl in the gift shop hurried our purchase of tickets so we could join the current tour group. As we hurried across the parking lot she caught us up to the rest of the group and we joined them in the first room. It was a lengthy tour so this was much appreciated! This attraction makes for a wonderful day trip! Nothing too gory for younger teens, but would be boring for anyone 10 and under.
Went here with my husband and two kids ages 10 and 13 to learn more about the incident that happened back in 1892 and enjoyed every moment. Our tour guide Micah (sp?) was amazing! She told us the story as it had unfolded as we took our time going from room to room. She explained things so well and kept my kids interest throughout the 45 min tour. We were able to take pics at our leisure and even got a few souvenirs before leaving. Great place for Historical buffs like us. Our tour was so good we have plans to return at a later date to enjoy a night at the Bed and Breakfast and to take the extended tour.
Great guide - very knowledgeable and friendly. Doesn't try to convince you if she did it or not, but let's you make your own assumption based on facts. Blood stains still on the floor! If you like creepy historical stuff this is a must do. Very interesting. Beautiful town as well.
The museum was nice and the guide had a lot on knowledge on the story of what might or might not have happened. It was a little pricy for a tour.
My future daughter-in-law was writing a paper for a Sociology Class and asked us if we were interested in touring the house with her. We made it a family day and all 6 of us went. What a fantastic experience! Our tour guide Rick was very informative and engaging, the rich history in the Lizzie Borden family is absolutely fascinating. They have also done a wonderful job with furnishing and decorating the house and it is historically accurate. Rick really did a wonderful job giving us all the facts and theories about the murders and was very interesting to listen to. Our tour was suppose to be 50 minutes long but it lasted well over an hour. We also visited the grave site and went by Maplecroft as well. I would highly recommend visiting the Lizzie Borden House. We have alreadly started discussing an overnight stay at the Bed and Breakfast ! Thank you Rick for such a wonderful experience and we all wish we would have asked you who you thought was the murderer...so if you are reading this maybe you could let us know! Linda
I had been dying to take the house tour for years and was finally able to get there! Richard was our guide and he was fantastic. He told us about lots of facts and theories surrounding the murders. The house looks amazing and gorgeously decorated. Richard also shared tidbits about the family prior to and details about LIzzie after she had been cleared of the murders. I would take this tour again and recommend it to anyone! If your interested in paranormal or conspiracy or murder mysteries, or just old houses, this is the place to visit. Price was reasonable and it was easy to find. Free parking in the back!
I went to tour the house on November 8, 2014 and Sue Vickery was our tour guide. It was an excellent tour. Very informative and interesting and the house and it's furnishings are beautiful. Sue was very knowleageable and friendly. She answered all of our questions in detail, and gave us a great fun tour.I would recommend this tour to everyone. It was wonderful. We are going back soon to spend the night as well!
