This is a great museum to visit and often staffed by old time homesteaders. Definitely a fun place to learn various ways the old timers built their log cabins. No McMansions here, just old time living. Often the moose wander the grounds. Always worth a visit when exploring the Kenai

No one wants to see a museum when the fish are biting but you really must take time out for this one.

Great if you're short on time, but lots of info if you'd like to linger. Kids (12-16) loved it too. Original buildings from early Soldotna settlement; schoolhouse, cabins, boats, etc. We walked from our condo near the Safeway. Volunteers are helpful and knowledgeable.

Really enjoyed seeing some of the homestead cabins and other buildings on property. 2 ladies on premises the day we went were very knowledgeable. One took us to each building and explained a little bit about what we were seeing. It was a great way to spend 45 minutes.

We stopped here and took alot of pictures of the school and cabins from when the town was founded. Matt was very informative about the history and pleasant to show us everything. I liked the location best. Beautiful!

Enjoyed see how simple things were and how hard they were. Each building depicts a unique time and way of life.

Wandering in a rental car on the Kenai peninsula landed us in Soldotna, Alaska. A quick check with TripAdvisor quickly let us know that we must stop at the Homestead Museum. I can't tell you enough how great this advice was. We learned the local history from the daughter of a true homesteader. There are several original homesteader buildings including homes, a school, food cache, and community building. While the buildings seem to be nineteenth century, they are actually mid twentieth century. The town was settled by homestead benefits given to World War II veterans who had to boat or walk to this Alaskan area with little in the way of conveniences and no existing infrastructure. You definitely will not be disappointed with this museum - there is something here that will interest you and better, you will meet interesting locals.

This is a very interesting collection of old cabins, a schoolhouse, and boats donated by local residents that typifies life in this area in the immediate post World War II period. The docent who conducted the tour (Carroll) is well informed and gives a very interesting tour. Well worth the time if you're interested in the history of this area.

This little museum is located on the edge of town and consists on several earlyday buildings and cabins. There iare lots of exhibits detailing early life on the kenai and Alaska. The volunteer staff consists of many old-timers that were part of the settlement and/or homesteaders. Very interesting stories to here. This is a good place to take a break from the fishing and sight-seeing and learn a little about the earlier times on the peninsula.

Don't miss this museum while you are in Soldotna! The volunteer gave us a very interesting tour. We even met one of the homesteaders!

For us this was the first stop on our "Authentic Alaska" bus tour. The staff was very friendly and eager to help and answer questions. We immediately walked down to the Kenai river, to feel the water temprature. It was cold!! There were several fishermen on the site. The visitor center itself was nice and very much like what you expect in places like that. I liked the esthetic look of it.

A friend and I arrived just before it opened. One of the docents was there waiting and told us some interesting stories about the place. When everything was unlocked, he took us around and showed us the cabins and schoolhouse. An interesting place for kids and adults. I even learned how the Alaskan flag came into being and that's a really fascinating story!

Great small town museum. A lot of local interests. Located right beside the world famous Kenai River.

This small museum, with several buildings, is very worthwhile and takes only an hour or two. It is staffed by volunteers who know so much about the area, the homesteading families, and the log buildings on site. So worthwhile! Easy to find and well worth your visit!

If you have an interest in history, you have to stop here. Great collection of buildings from the early settlement of the area in the mid 20th century. What made the place so interesting was the wonderful docent who was from one of the pioneering families of the area. Amazing to learn that just a little over a half century ago people were settling this area under the conditions that most of us associate with a 150 years ago or more. Allow an hour and a half or so to enjoy this!
