Bad weather in Glacier National Park? No problem. This beautiful little art museum (plus the Central School Historical Society and Museum) are worth at least half a day of your time in Kalispell. The two properties are walking distance from each other. The Hockaday Art Museum currently has breathtaking Montana landscapes by Oberlin, as well as permanent exhibits that are thoughtful and interesting. We happened by on a Thursday, which meant free admission for seniors with coffee and cookies. The museum is named for its benefactor, who sadly died before he could see the fruits of his effort to open this museum in Kalispell. For local history, geology and downright entertainment, be sure to also see the Central School Museum, a couple blocks from the Hockaday.
For a small gallery , it had something for everyone.Displaying and promoting Local Artists , Recent display was Nicholas Oberling , wich was excellent. My favorite local artist always has been Mark Ogle.
Hockaday mueseun is sooo much fun to visit and learn about! They have a great collection of paintings and is enjoyable!!! Also, it has great people that work there. They are always nice!
We enjoyed learning about the artists of Montana. The museum was originally a Carnegie Library. The woman at the admissions desk was very enthusiastic and proud of the museum and Kalispell area. Interesting exhibits and enticing gift shop!
The main exhibits change several times per year. We were fortunate to see a lovely exhibit of western art from a private collection. Spend some time here. It's worth it.
Well run museum that features mainly western art. Exhibitions change periodically. Very homey. Pleasant surroundings.
The art on exhibit is always a treat. The staff is helpful and interested in your visit being a success.
Great little gallery with a permanent exhibit focused on Montana - Native American art / Glacier National Park / western culture. A few of the mural pieces of the park are quite beautiful. The rotating exhibits are also interesting. Many of the pieces in the rotating exhibit are available for purchase. Worth a stop to see the art even if it is a small gallery. There is a $5 fee for adults.
I found the variety of art very colorful, innovative and interesting. They were very friendly, helpful and informative! Wonderful gift shop too!!!
Excellent permanent exhibit of Glacier National Park and native American artwork, as well as seasonal exhibits. This summer Terrance Guardipee and Plein Air paintings.
30-45 minutes of self-directed art examination. Indian art and traditional Glacier scene paintings. Well worth the entrance fee.
Lots of knowledge from all the staff and literature. The guided tour is a must do. Definitely my favorite museum in town.
The Hockaday Museum is a jewelbox for the display of NW artists. It is not a large museum so people expecting an equivalent experience to a large city museum may be disappointed. However, there is a strong collection of artists from Montana and excellent travelling exhibits. A recent exhibit of Terrance Guardipee, a nationally known contemporary Blackfoot artist, is a good example. The museum also sponsors art classes and programs like Crits and Croissants (an opportunity to participate in critiques of artists' works over coffee), and Senior Teas (seniors come for tea and a docent talk).
Excellent world class art museum-with friendlt staff.and Hermitage feel...Western and local artisans show here, as well as historid western art.
This small art museum is housed in a classic Carnegie Library building. They have a few exhibitions of local art and some Glacier Park pieces, but not as many as we hoped to see. About average for a small town art museum. Not really worth a visit for tourists but hats off to this small town for maintaining an art museum for the community.
