My sons and I visited Zollicoffer Park - Confederate Cemetery- Battlefield this weekend. It was very well maintained, interesting, and a great stop along the driving tour.
this place is spooky i havent been here since i was a child,. iam originally from russell springs ky. but it is a spooky place to visit
The museum & park are well maintained. The park has many stops along rt. 235 with signs that expain each stop. The battle of Mill Springs is well documented. Most of the land where the battles were fought are very well preserved. We were fortunate to witness the re-enactment of the 'Battle Of Mill Springs' which brought a lotof the history to life. This site is a good "day trip" with the museum, cemetery, park & numerous stops, along with other items close by: Lake Cumberland, an apple farm, & the actual Mill @ Mill Springs,The city of Somerset, Ky. is only 10 minutes away. Within driving distance is Cumberland Falls,Mamouth Cave, Wolf Creek Dam, & the overlook of Lake Cumberland. (beautiful countryside)
Zollicoffer Park is located on State Route 235 a few miles south of Nancy KY. While the park is small, there is adequate parking and kept up nicely. This park commemorates the first skirmish of the Battle of Mill Springs and mot notably marks the location where General Zollicoffer was Killed. The interpretive signs are well placed and accurately describe the mistakes made there by both the North and the South. This is a short stop but well with your time. The park itself is easily accessible, but the trail is only for the physically fit.
The park makes you stop and think of the lives lost during the Civil War. The area is so beautiful, it humbles you to realize the battle that was fought so many years ago.
