We visited in Aug 2014 and it was nice for a few hours. The staff was friendly & knowledgeable and we got to see a musket fire which my boys loved. They even got to " join" the army by dressing up with weapons which was cute. There was an area to make bead crafts and another to shoot a bow which my 6 year old enjoyed. Basically this is a reproduction of the original fort which is across the street from the Steamship place. You can watch a video, get a short tour with the musket fire and then walk around yourself to look at the displays. It only takes about 1-2 hours to do and that's with the kids having time to just run around. They do give veteran discounts so that was a plus. The gift shop is loaded with junky items, we really wanted to find something for the boys but it was all too junky to purchase for the prices. Better priced t-shirts would've been nice. All in all, it's worth checking out at least once.
The museum has reenactments, we heard the cannon sound, the actors wore typical clothing and artifacts
I really, really wanted to like this museum and it was the reason for our trip up to Lake George; we had been up before, but didn't have time to spend at the museum previously. As I had just finished reading The Last of the Mohicans, I thought it would be fun to check it out. Unfortunately, there just isn't that much to see here that justifies the cost, and that's taking into account a 2 for 1 deal on Groupon. The fort is a remake of the original fort that only lasted a few years before it was burned down. It's a very small place and there truly isn't much to see here. The few workers that are there are quite knowledgeable and very kind, so that is certainly a plus. However, it's just not that interesting to warrant a visit. And if you do come, definitely avoid the gift shop, it's just filled with overpriced junk.
Great room, staff and breakfast. Real value. Room was clean and staff helpful in our visit. Breakfast was over the top.
Saw this fort on the same day I saw Fort Ticonderoga and Crown Point. You should go to those instead. This one is just over-priced and kitsch-y. The historical content is very watered down.
We didn't visit here until out 4th trip to Lake George and had no idea what we were missing. This was a very fun visit and very interesting for the kids. They have re-enactments that the kids can participate in and was lots of fun, the museum is also very interesting. Highly recommended to visit at least once.
The museum price was too high for a family, but the gift shop was full of historical things beyond the typical tourist pickings.
Great ghost tour. The guides were knowledgeable and fun. The historical narrative was very interesting and fun
Friendly staff, great history lesson! beautiful view of lake George! The gift shop features alot of souveniers available for purchase
We had a really fun time at the Fort by Firelight special event. The staff is so lovely and the fort was beautiful at night with candle lanterns. We love visiting a piece of history and really enjoyed the scenario tour, with awesome re-enactors. We will definitely be back!
We stopped here because we had seen the movie Last of the Mohicans. The location is on the lake and from the fort there is a good view of the lake. We walked up to the fort, paid our admission and went to the theater to see the introductory movie and then the tour. We also visited the museum exhibits. The gift shop is large but the only items we were interested in were the books.
interesting history lesson! lovely views and even though I am not a history buff, I found the day to be informing!
Fort William Henry trip (went twice, morning and late afternoon) was informative and it was made interesting by knowledgeable local Guides in period attire. We went there last fall and late evening Lake George views from the top were awesome. The Gift Shop had items / souvenirs which were overpriced (I thought). I would recommended this place to anyone who's visiting lake George and has 2-3 hours free.
Knowledgeable guides in period attire. Don't miss the cannon demonstration. Enjoyed the exhibits very informative. There are some steps here so if you have mobility issues it might not be for you (there are some ramps but a bit steep)
We came here because I found a Groupon that got us in for half price. I'm not sure I'd pay full price. The tour was interesting, and the guides were knowledgable, as far as we could tell. They start you out with a short film, which I found to be a bit boring. And to make it worse, some moron had baby that wouldn't shut up, so it was hard to concentrate. This film was not for kids, unless seniors in high school. The gift shop was insanely overpriced, so we didn't make a purchase. Even the stuff on the clearance tables were pricey and not worth it.All in all, we're glad we made the visit, and would recommend it to anyone who had an interest in American history.
