Wonderfully maintained carousel from the turn of the century (20's), a piece of real history still working and giving kids, old and young alike, a ride into the past!
Highland Park is in the Town of Union. The carousel, swimming pool and snack stand are seasonal. The park also offers picnic areas and a playground.
Have always loved Highland Park - the admission to the carousel was always one piece of litter, which I thought was a great way to teach kids and adults alike how important a clean park is. The playground is large - plenty of swings and pavillions, a snack shop with reasonable prices and variety, and the huge pool. Everything you need to enjoy a day at the park with nice views.
One of six working carousels in the region given by George F. Johnson, this is a small 36 animal carousel. Patrons can ride for free. This carousel was made in 1925 and was relocated to Highland Park. This carousel is the most sedate of the carousel with only a few of the horses going up and down. Check with the attendants to see which are the working horses. Carousel enthusiasts will enjoy the visit as will small children. This is one of the slower carousels. The carousel is in a large park with a playground for children, picnic facilities and a concession stand. There is a large swimming pool near by and restrooms adjacent to the carousel. The directions were not clear on the maps on how to find this carousel. It is located inside the Highland Park (no signs). Park in one of the main parking lots and walk up the hill to the concession stand. The carousel is just beyond it and not visible from the road. Each carousel in the circuit has a collectors card for riders. Collect all 6 and trade them in for a button. It is suggested to start with West Endicott Park carousel and work your way east, ending at the Ross Park carousel. You can get a special treat for your button at the carousel shop.
