Stopped in on a day they were closed, but the owner saw us and told us to come on in and I am glad he did. Every wine we tasted that day was excellent and he had a much larger selection of wines than most of the wineries in the area. His Petite Verdot and his Tempranillo are especially tasty. By the time we left Reeder we were carrying out a full case of wine. It is a little out of the way but If you are wine tasting in the area, be sure to make Reeder one of your stops, and take your credit card.
Whenever we have visitors we take them to Reeder Mesa. Not only are the wines excellent but the trip is too. Turning off the highway to Delta from Grand Junction, you climb through dry desert, higher and higher, into junipers, dotted with pasture and cattle. High above you is the top of the Grand Mesa and you can use the telescope on the deck to view the waterfall on the edge. Great wines and great views. I wish I had a photo!
First the positive....Doug's wines are pretty darn good. The Dry Riesling is the star of the show. It is clear he knows his craft. The winery is a bit tricky to get to. It is not convenient and definitely an out of the way find. So if you like a little off the beaten track you will like the adventure. Our tasting experience was not a feel good time. Doug clearly was interested in something else other than pouring wines. We felt as if we were interrupting his day. I get it, it is a tough commitment 7 days a week. We asked to taste another wine not open and it was "no, I have plenty open and I am not opening another" we bought it just in case it was good with out tasting. Yes we did purchase plenty of wine. He explained he was getting out of the business and explained that just about the time he sits down for a sandwich someone shows up to taste wine.I have to imagine that maybe it was a bad day? I probably would not recommend to my friends nor do the four of us plan to go back. We will drink the case of wine we bought and chuckle about our experience. The place has beautiful views and a great deck...we would have loved to linger and sip wine but chose to move on.
The Reeder Mesa Winery was rec amended to us by Vista Vineyard B&B in Palisades Co.What a find, Doug the owner is an amazing person who showed us some wonderful wines. They have a tremendous variety of wines. Because of the location, Doug only grows Riesling grapes. Doug travels to California for the rest of his grapes and only buys the best. He has been voted the best winery in the Palisade Valley for 3 years in a row.
Reeder Mesa was the most fun I've had at a winery anywhere. Great wine, great views, great friends and just a great experience! We are a member of the wine club and have enjoyed every bottle.
Reeder Mesa is one of my favorite wineries to visit while on the Western Slope of Colorado. It's about 20 minutes outside of Palisade, CO. The wines, especially the Petit Verdot and Petit Syrah, are not to be missed. Also, take advantage of the large deck with great views of the mesa and vineyard for a picnic accompanied with a glass of your favorite wine.
Many travel to Palisade for wine, but just over the hill, 20 mins from Palisade is a winery not to be missed. The winemaker has great taste and makes wines worth the drive. If you are in the area stop in and see Doug and taste some wine. Also has a wonderful wine club with quarterly parties!
The wine is terrific, the owner is knowledgable and engaging. Every time we plan to stop by, we end up spending most of the afternoon on the lovely deck outside enjoying a glass of Doug's finest..
