We have taken full day excursions with Paria Outfitters for the past two years. All of the guides are long term residents with great knowledge of local history as well as the geology and natural history of the area. They have explored so much of the plateau that they can take visitors places the other outfits haven't yet discovered. The rock formations are spectacular in shape and color, the likes of which we have seen nowhere else. Also, the guides are so enthusiastic they add excitement to the trip. We have been out with Steve, the owner, who as been in the area more than 20 years and Dallas who was born and raised in the Grand Staircase area. They are constantly exploring the area for new sites and have such a good time you can't help having one.
We hired Paria Outfitters after reading some reviews on TripAdvisor and considering cost etc. vs the likelihood of finding these places on our own our rental vehichle. We had email contact a few times leading up to the trip and it was odd that they didn't require a deposit. They had the attitude that if the trip conditions were going to be poor, then they wouldn't take you unless you REALLY wanted to go. Cancellation would be at no cost to you! Our guide, Dallas was a very affable man in his 70's with great conversation to keep the bumpy ride into Coyote Buttes South interesting. Once there, he maintained a good pace while ensuring that we saw the "classic" highlights as well as some of the gems he had found over time. We covered probably 2/3 of the "Cottonwood Cove" area.Since we had asked to also see the White Pocket as well, our time at the permitted Buttes South area was a LITTLE shorter, but we were very happy with his coverage of it. His approach to White Pocket was also very good, as he built up the interest as we came around corners and he led us to find little beauties as we explored the area.Covering two areas in one day means we had to keep each area visit a little shorter, but Dallas managed to keep us from feeling rushed. The company provides a good bag lunch to eat while out there with ample water and other drinks as well. All in all, a high quality experience.
I hired Paria Outpost for a trip to White Pocket and also another trip to the Wave. This was the highlight of my 2 weeks in Southwestern Utah. Brent was my guide and he took me to places and viewpoints that I only dreamed existed. I would never have found some of these places had I not hired a guide. Brent was also very helpful always asking if he could help by carrying anything for me and he even walked my dog while I took some photos. I will definitely be coming back and hiring them for another trip next year.
We spent three terrific days with Steve, Susan and their team seeing the Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument. We'll be back for more next Spring! We had permits for North Coyote Buttes (The Wave) and South Coyote and had amazing tours of both. The third day, Steve took us to some less traveled but AWESOME places in the GSENM. North and South Coyote Buttes are by far the best known sites in GSENM but, believe me, there is a lot more to see than just those. So if you don't have permits for the restricted access (or have been to them before) let Steve and Susan show you some of the less well known and less explored areas. In addition to being first-rate guides, Steve and Susan and team are first-rate people. Nature lovers and outdoor photographers: If you want to see the real GSENM, these are the folks to guide you.
Our tour with Steve into South Coyote Buttes was the true highlight of a three-week S. Utah trip. Steve is a great guy, an excellent guide and all around cool dude. He knew exactly where to be and when for us to get the photos we wanted and he proved to be an immense wealth of knowledge. Honestly, it was the best thing we did on our trip. I was initially told by locals that I could take my Outback to SCB and skip the guide. I had driven it to Toroweap (serious road) and thru the Freemont River Ford but, after two minutes headed to SCB, I knew there was no way I could have made it. Steve knows the road and got us there safely after a fun journey. The other key factor is SCB offers amazing scenery and without his knowledge, I'm certain we would have missed some of the highlights. Both he and Susan are great people who offer an excellent service at a great price. This tour is a "must do" and make sure you go with Paria Outpost. Concerning the permits, we walked into the Kanab office in late afternoon and found that there were four SCB permits available (although the young woman did not offer that information up...I had to ask for some reason). I got the permits and called Paria Outpost and set up the tour for the next day. They are easy to find and are located essentially halfway between Kanab and Page with Page being about six miles closer. We hope to head back in May and take another tour...it's really worth every penny and I encourage you to do the same!
We recently went out to White Pocket with Steve. I can honestly say this was one of the best tours we have done and Steve went above and beyond to insure we had a great time. He knows every camera angle to use, every location like the back of his hand, and he is just a good person. He went out of his way to make certain that my wife, who it turns out was not up to the hike, had a pleasant afternoon in the shade while he took the 3 of us (there was a German couple with us) to other sections of White Pocket. They provided a basic but well done lunch and water for the trip. Steve knew where every bump was in the 1 3/4 hour trip out and the same back, so the drive was less terrible than it might have been. When we return to Sedona, we will be doing at least two more tours with Susan and Steve. He even provided a facilitree.
We booked with the Dodsons for two tours: White Pocket (with Susan) and South Coyote Buttes (with Steve). Both days were amazing and the highlight of our 10-day trip to the Page area. We highly recommend Paria Outpost. You won't be disappointed. Both guides are extremely knowledgeable and will take you to the most amazing formations of both places. We can't wait to go back!
We did a day tour to Coyote Buttes South (for which we had successfully bought permits online) and to White Pocket with Paria Outpost. Our guide for the day was Dallas. We consider this trip the highlight of our vacation. Both CBS and White Pocket are stunning, and Dallas showed us the best photo locations all day long.Lunch sandwiches were good, and cool drinks (Coke, Water, Gatorade) were available throughout the day.Given that both CBS and especially White Pocket are very hard to get to due to miles of sandy off-road, the money spent on this trip was well worth it. Don't consider going there with your rental SUV...Many thanks to Susan, Steve and especially Dallas for making this such a great experience.
Susan and Steve are fantastic! We stayed at the bed and breakfast 2 nights, it is rustic but very clean and has everything you need. Susan made us breakfast both mornings that was delicious. Brent took us on our hike to The Wave which turned out to be much more than The Wave, he was so knowledgeable and just AWESOME (thanks for all the photography tips Brent). If you are debating whether or not to pay for a guide....DO IT and use Paria Outpost (because they are the best), we are experienced hikers but by using a guide we were able to see much more, feel safe while hiking, & not worry about getting lost. We will be back to explore more of this beautiful area and we WILL be using Paria Outpost. Thank you Susan, Steve, & Brent!Rachael & Diane!
After failing to get tickets for the North Coyote Buttes (the wave) in the online auction then I applied and successfully got two permits online for South Coyote Buttes. I contacted Paria Outpost, via email (it was on a sunday @ 10pm), regarding booking a tour with them as in my opinion, with living in the UK and not knowing the local terrain then it was sensible to use a local tour guide; also taking into account we are not really hardened experienced hikers. They responded the next day and provide information and pricing for the SCB and White Pocket Tour and said that we would not be disappointed with the scenery and geology in the SCB. I booked a tour for the date of our permit, 23rd September, and explained that we will be travelling around many sites in the Utah/Arizona area and could they pick up our permits from the BLM office. They responded back promptly stating that they would collect the permits - which the duly did.We arrived at the office on the day of the tour and were paired up with another couple from France; Dallas was our guide for the day.All I can simply say is that the tour of the South Coyote Buttes and White pocket was absolutely amazing and the sights were beyond the imagination. Dallas was informative about the rock formations and the local area and was very patient, especially as I'm a keen amateur (actually not so good) photographer and wanted to capture the scenery as best I could, so took many photographs. The lunch and snacks provided were good and there was plenty of soft drinks and water available the whole day, which was important as the sky was cloudless and temperature was in the high 80's.If I visit the Utah/Arizona area again the I would certainly use Paria Outpost again as a tour guide. Thanks to the Dodsons and Dallas for a truly memorable day out and I would add that if you're the adventurous type and love natural scenic beauty and/or photography and have a bucket list, then the South Coyote Buttes should be on it.
Paria Outpost & Outfitters was the best choice we made for our trip! Susan & Steve are so knowledgeable and friendly! We had Mike as a guide who was the perfect blend of helpfulness and allowing us to discover the magical, ethereal area of White Pocket.Susan cooked a great breakfast for us to start our day right, and packed a wonderful lunch for us that we ate in the slot canyon with the swirling reds, golds and oranges of the walls. The accommodations are simple - don't expect luxury, but do expect the memory of a lifetime.
Mic and Simone from Germany – Great day with Brad at Coyote Buttes South and White Pocket! We were lucky to win a permit for Coyote Buttes South where we couldn´t go with our RV. So we decided to book a tour at Paria Outpost, which was a great decision and definitely the money worth! If you have a permit invest the money for the tour, the guides know the great places and the best way to hike around. It is possible to stay with your RV or in a guestroom directly at the Outpost. You don´t have to go to the nearby RV Ranch, unless you need a hookup. You can get a shower at the Outpost also, you just have to ask Susan or Steve in advance. We had a great dry camping there for no money.Susan made us a great lunch box and gave us a very hearty welcome.Thank you Brad for the amazing day! It was so much fun driving and hiking around with you! Brad is a great guide, ask for him, he is not on the homepage as a guide, but he should be, because he is very professional and lovely. We will keep this day in our mind forever!See you again,Mic and Simone from Germany
We booked Paria Outfitters because of good reviews on Tripadvisor and they lived up to the reviews under trying conditions. We started out for White Pocket at about 8am after the drive in from Kanab. We met Steve and Susan, the owners and Mike, our guide. We were concerned with the weather. It had rained during the night and there was concern about the washes and streams on the trip through the back country. We decided it would be fine unless we got a lot more rain, so we headed out on the rugged 2 hour drive out into the Vermillion Cliffs National Monument wilderness.White pocket was wonderful and we were into the photography when it began to rain and thunder and lightning. Mike got us to safety under a rock overhang until the rain and lightning subsided. The up-side to the rain was the puddles that formed allowing us to get reflection shots of the rocks which was wonderful. Mike was great as he gave us advice on where to shoot and settings to use. He is a semi-retired professional wildlife photographer and a very interesting guy and he was very helpful.Later in the afternoon as we climbed into the suburban SUV to leave it started to pour again. Mike was concerned about flash flooding on the road. He was able to call Steve to meet us at the biggest stream. On the way to meet him we barreled through one rushing stream but when we got to where Steve was meeting us, the creek was raging. We waited an hour or so and Mike was able to wade across to prove it was safe so we all crossed over to Steve's vehicle and made it back to the Outpost. They went out of their way to get us back safely and the did a great job on showing us White Pocket.
My husband and I came through in July on our honeymoon planning to do an overnight at White Pocket. Unfortunately, just as we arrived, he got hit with one of the worst migraine's he's ever had in his life. Susan and our guide, Mike, were incredibly accommodating of our sudden change in circumstances and we were able to make last-minute changes so that I could spend the afternoon photographing at White Pocket while my husband recovered back at the outpost. It was a superb if somewhat abbreviated visit and Mike provided excellent pointers on how to drive my camera to get some amazing photogrpahs! He even kindly invited us over to his place to watch the sunset over monument so we could enjoy some of the spectacular colour show there. We are already planning to come back in a few years so we can catch the evening colours and night views at White Pocket, and we will definitely go with Paria Outpost, again! You can't ask for better hospitality or more accommodating hosts!
We did hike The Wave on our own the day before but, as Susan promised, this one is even better! It gets more and more exiting and you just can't stop taking pictures of these extraordinary landscapes and rock formations. Forget going there alone unless you have a very serious 4WD and you know how to drive it. In any cases, I would stay with Paria Outpost as Steve and Susan know so well this area that you will really enjoy it all, they will show you all the remote places and the most photogenic locations. This tour was a unique experience for us and we really appreciated this fantastic day with Steve, a really cool guy, that knows really everything of this area. We stayed at the BnB the night before, the room is very rustic but the breakfast prepared by Susan was great. Full lunch and beverages provided for the tour.Thank you Steve and Susan for this memorable day!A & A
