Few Americans can be accepted by both political parties. An exception was "Tama Jim" Wilson who served as United States Secretary of Agriculture for sixteen years under both Republican and Democratic administrations. A fascinating statesmen and champion of agriculture, Wilson believed the United States should be self-sufficient in agriculture and was responsible for bringing dozens on new plants to this country for cultivation. The museum has a wealth of artifacts from Wilson who farmed nearby. Traer is located south of Waterloo on a direct route to Des Moines. You can't miss another iconic feature of the community either. On Main Street is a spiral staircase from the sidewalk to the second story of the building. The staircase was installed with it was discovered that the interior hallway was too narrow for a new stairs.
