This is a very extensive museum with a large number of time frames.I centered on the modern and there are some excellent impressionist paintings.I also liked the historical rooms.I would suggest going a number of times and focusing on a specific subject
Located 5 min from downtown this museum is huge. Plan a day because there a lot to see, read and contemplate. 2 second floor is Asian art and everything from jade porcelain silk robe.... 3 floor american and European architecture furniture old room from different period paintaing ...plenty to see. If you love beautiful art or learn something you will find it here. Again no reason not to go it's free , but you can leave a donation it worth it.
Amazing museum - would take days to do it justice. Got to see the Habsburgs exhibition which was fabulous - well worth seeing
Great kids programs and family days. Love the special exhibits! I have seen Rembrandt and Habsburgs there recently. Both great shows. Also love their gift shop
With a highly eclectic collection of items, the Minneapolis institute of arts offers many adventures to one’s mind. From great pieces of European fine arts, to statues and sculptors from ancient china. The museum also hold fun activities every third Thursday, usually with drinks and live music, all for the price of nothing. It is a great way for locals to mingle, mix, and thaw out of the freezing winters.
We are members of the Institute so were able to secure a discount for the glorious Hapsburg exhibit. It is very well done and offers artifacts and stories that should interest all visitors! We paid the extra money for the narrated headset tour, which is always worth it to us. The added 'carriage' replica and costumes for photographs was a fun and cool idea! You can see the entire exhibit in 1.5 -2 hours, so it doesn't take all day, even if you read every panel. The new Membership structure is very confusing and it doesn't seem there is any advantage to paying $149 for membership vs $0, so what is up with that? It seems they should rethink that structure and give the community a reason to bump up to another level (free admission to one special exhibit with $149 fee, etc. or free admission to private lecture, etc.). No eye rolling about simply bumping up our contribution to support the Institute without getting something in return...there are too many organizations vying for our money!
This exhibit just began and will continue until the middle of May. We ordered our $20 tickets online and were given a specific time to enter the exhibit which was located on the second floor. There are several knights in shining armor, a beautiful coach, and a magnificently decorated horse pulling a very elaborate sleigh. I particularly enjoyed see the Maria Teresa painting by Velasquez. She was quite a powerful person who had given birth to 16 children, one being the famous Marie Antoinette. There were quite a few paintings in the exhibit. Another favorite were the articles of clothing worn by the Austrian and Hungarians that were several centuries old. Sisi who was married to Franz Joseph had several beautiful ball gowns. Her waist was so tiny. At the end, is a film showing the funeral procession of Franz Joseph. It was a very interesting exhibit. Afterwards, we went to our favorite section on third floor, the Impressionists and the period rooms. A person could truly spend a day here. Don't miss the great gift shop as well.
The best exhibit we have ever seen in a museum, and according to MIA, the best in 60 years. All of the other exhibits are free, the Habsburgs is $20/person.
This is a wonderful art museum well-worth a visit. We have been here many times and are now members. The regular exhibits are free, representing a wide range of European and Asian art plus much more. But this museum is not overwhelming to the first-time visitor. And they have periodic special exhibitions like the one on the Habsburgs from the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna that we recently saw. This exhibition included paintings, sculpture, suits of armor, royal carriages and even a sleigh. If you're looking for something worthwhile to do, spend a few hours here and you will be impressed. It's a fantastic art museum!
Spent several hours here on a Sunday afternoon and we loved it. They had a Hapsburg collection on display during this period and it was fascinating. The collection was extensive and beautiful. The staff throughout the exhibit were thoughtful and informative. The rest of the institute has many beautiful pieces and one could spend days sorting through it all. Definitely worth stopping by.
Minneapolis Institute of Arts is always an interesting and beautiful place to visit. MIA is able to exhibit wonderful collections throughout the year. Currently and for the next few months it's the Habsburgs, Rarely Seen Masterpieces from Europe's Greatest Dynasty. Each time there is something new we are anxious to see and learn from the exhibits. The Twin Cities are so fortunate to have MIA. Any opportunity to visit the MIA is highly recommended.
The MIA in Minneapolis should be a "must see" destination for visitors and residents. Its collections, particularly in the arts of Asia (South, Southeast and Far East) is unparalleled. The museum is a wonderful space for adults and children, with a lovely cafe and gorgeous setting (even in winter). It is a hidden gem (as most visitors usually hear about the Walker Art Center and may miss the uniqueness and depth of offerings at the MIA venue). As far as tickets go, the museum is free although special exhibits often have entrance fees attached to them. One can enjoy it a lot with or without the special exhibits.
We make sure to visit MIA every year over the holidays so we can see the decorated period rooms. The rooms are decorated for the holidays like they would have been during their era. It's so nice to see! We also enjoy going for the special exhibitions. The permanent collections are extensive and wide ranging from classical paintings and sculptures to contemporary art and photography. The MIA is great way to spend a day--especially when the weather isn't so nice. Remember that the museum is CLOSED on Mondays.
We always go for the major exhibitions, but last Friday we just visited the MIA and spent the day roaming through all of the exhibits. The permanent collections are fascinating and interesting. Great way to spend a wintry day. I would certainly recommend the Hapsburgs, but be sure to explore the rest of the many exhibits in the permanent collection of the MIA.
History and art trip your trigger? This is a spot for you. This, 2015 is the MIA's 100th birthday and they have pulled out all the stops
