As a Minneapolis resident, the skyway system is essential to commuting and getting around downtown in the winter. It provides warmth and allows you to relax a little and even enjoy a bite to eat from one of the many restaurants located there. It's relatively easy to navigate with the maps, so there's no fear of getting lost.
The skyway System, offers an unique and fun different experience where at different spots you can play a few holes of mini golf. The "fairways' are interesting in and themselves- example, one is made out of a door- just something a little different to do
The sky way lets you get all over downtown Minneapolis. It has good coffee shops and stores so you can shop, drink coffee, and get your nails done of the way to work. Just remember some of the bridges close as early a 7pm so bring your coat if you are going out to dinner!
We enjoyed getting from the Hyatt Regency to the Convention Center without our coats on. Only one problem, they had promised to leave the skywalks open late on Sat so we could get back after the dance awards ended after midnight. We managed to get almost to our hotel and could not get in. Fortunately it was only across the street but still cold without a coat.
Wherever you go downtown Mpls in late Fall or Winter you will appreciate the Skyway System. You can get so many places and the shops and food choices within are great. Very safe and well guided. A must see if in Mpls.
Our grandkids love to walk around this skyway system and just watch people. Having said that, it is nice that you don't have to go outside to walk from building to building in that area of downtown. The skyway is safe and we have always found it to be clean.
If you want to shop on Nicolette St in the winter, the Skyway System is a relief from the cold. Remember to layer your clothes as it is room temp. through out that area. In the heat of the summer is cooled.
easiest way to get around to all the stores, etc... without being out in the cold. You'll have to go outside here and there to get to specific places, but you'll be able to use the Skywalk 90% and outside about 10%
This is the way to do a skyway system with one exception. My little city Sioux City) at least keeps our skyways open on Sundays. I couldn't get to my parking ramp from my hotel as the skyway was locked.Other than Sundays the skyway is a wondrous place with a varied and seemingly unlimited array of eateries. There are also various service establishments as well. Often crowded on a weekday, especially at lunch. It's worth taking some time to see a different side of Minneapolis.
The Skyway system has been around now for almost 40 years in Minneapolis. You can walk pretty anywhere within a 10 block radius of 8th and Nicollet Ave. When the temps are 25F or lower, especially the windchills, they are of great comfort. They also add another layer of economic activity on one level above the streets. If you live in an apartment/condo. It's a great way to move around in the winter without thinking of falling on snow or ice covered streets or sidewalks.
Yes, it was warmer than being outside. However, we saw to fights, one argument and heard some extremely vulgar language. It seems as though so of the less fortunate come in to the skyway out of the elements.
The skyway system efficiently gets a walking traveler from one end of downtown to the other, and the many buildings and establishments along the way would keep anybody entertained and their minds off the long walk to anywhere. Safe and secure, even at night.
You definitely appreciate the skyway system in the winter! You can do everything in the skyway that you would do driving around. Get your hair cut, eat, shop for pretty much anything, and get to Target and all the other important stores. You can stay at a hotel and just go through the skyway for everything! One of the places to go in the middle of winter in Minnesota!
