big stone national wildlife refuge

If you come here in the winter make sure you dress for the weather and have some cross country skis or at least some snow shoes because this area isn't built for much else. We drove out here to take our pictures next to the Check point MN sign post located for some reason here at the wildlife refuge. It took us 160 miles to drive here from Minneapolis and aside from taking some pictures the horrible cold winds had us scurrying back to the car in record time. We may have enjoyed a better view more but there wasn't a lot going on here so we were really scratching our heads and asking ourselves why did we drive so far for this? You may want to do the same before making this amazing voyage to such a stark and bitterly cold landscape.

Take a drive through to view colorful leaves, huge boulders in the middle of nowhere and you may also quite possibly see wildlife.
