I love touring train museums and this one was very good. They had a nice model train layout plus the windows overlooked the train yards......we then went out and found the Union Pacific "Big Boy" locomotive. The largest locomotive in the world and a monster it is....

I underestimated the amount of nothing in Cheyenne for this to be considered their "downtown". It's a pleasant little museum with a Boot Barn and two restaurants surrounding it. It's $7 a person to tour the small museum. Not horrible, but be sure to ask the visitor desk for a coupon book which has among others, $1 off admission. You can tell the museum is run by locals and lovers of history. There's a lot of missing pieces and misspellings in the information about the artifacts, which makes it that much more quaint and a definite sign that this is a labor of love. Worth a stop if your traveling through and enjoy trains and history.

On our way from Mount Rushmore to Boulder in Colorado we stopped in Cheyenne for a break. After a quick snack we had a walk around and came across the Cheyenne Depot Museum. It was interesting with information about the railroad and they were setting up a model railroad on the first floor, it was a work in progress but some of it was functioning and the chap in charge was from the UK and we chatted, he had a passion for trains. He showed us some of the models running and the models were very good. It was recreating a proper train journey through Wyoming and I would think the finished product was going to be fantastic. Well worth a visit if you are in Cheyenne.

My son loves trains, was hoping to see some more interactive or something ??? We lasted about an hour, family got bored and left.. It was OK - just not great.

Make sure you stop and see this wonderful history of how Cheyenne came to be and the history of the railroad. So many interesting displays and items from long ago. Make sure you go upstairs and see the model layout because those guys are experts when it comes to model railroading! So glad we stopped here. Kids loved it and took lots of photos for their teachers since they just covered this information in class.

We took a side trip while on a Colorado vacation to visit Cheyenne, WY and the Cheyenne Depot Museum. The depot building is huge, and a great example of depot design and construction. The museum occupies about 1/3 of the depot and includes many photographs, models, and details that would interest anyone who appreciates history. There is also a large HO narrow gauge model railroad on the second floor. The gift shop has items that are unavailable anywhere else, including Union Pacific items that I could not get at the employee company store. The staff are very helpful and friendly, and gave me proper directions to see the Big Boy locomotive displayed at the city park. We really enjoyed our visit to this museum and would highly recommend it.

We were visiting Fort Collins, CO and on a whim, decided to drive to Cheyenne, WY. When we arrived in the city we found this great museum. It had great information and photos of the trains from the early train days. The best part for us, was the Thomas the Train set in the corner that the kids played with while the parents were able to actually look at the photos and read the information. The observation deck overlooking the train tracks and the model trains upstairs were a hit with everyone as well.

The Cheyenne Depot Museum was featured in the Cheyenne visitor information packet we obtained from the Visitor Center, along with a coupon for discounted admission, which was why we decided to stop here on a recent visit to the historic downtown Cheyenne plaza and rail yard area. The museum features numerous and colorful exhibits regarding the history of Cheyenne and the beginning of the Transcontinental Railroad and the Union Pacific Railroad. Staff is available to answer questions if you have any, and we were even allowed to bring our dog inside on the hot summer day we visited, provided he was "friendly and leashed."This museum is worth a visit if you have time while in the historic downtown area of Cheyenne.

I did not go inside the museum as it had a charge and I was mostly interested in the building. The building & the Plaza in front of it have kind of a magical feeling around sunset and afterwards. As long as it's not too cold!

We stopped here to fill out our afternoon. Neither of us are train buffs but we both found the museum interesting. The museum itself relies heavily on pictures and text panels. There are some videos as well. It all paints an interesting picture of the railroads that opened the west.Upstairs is an incredible model train exhibit. Fortunately when we were there a couple people were working on it so they were able to give us information about the set-ups beginnings. Hard to imagine it was originally built in a trailer and then hoisted into the building by crane. There is still work being done to make it fit into its current location. For both of us the modeling of the terrain and buildings was more interesting than the railroad itself. They have sections in progress of every step so you can see how it is all done. Really great. Will never look at a model railroad display the same way again.

Very well done train museum that explains Cheyenne's founding as a 'Hell on Wheels" town during the building of the transcontinental railroad. Good parking, nice gift shop and a few close by places for lunch. Nice outing.

First class museum and well worth the small entry fee. The photographic history alone was worth it, but then they had so many cool train artifacts. It was a great side-trip for us in Cheyenne. Highly recommended.

Well-arranged story of the Union Pacific in the area and how railroading has changed with the advent of the diesel locomotive.

There was a wonderful gift shop, and a very large miniature train exhibit. Some displays are waiting to be filled.

They have a great farmers market at the Depot Saturdays. Great fresh produce, jams, jellies, the usual.
