My friend and I visited Bacon's Castle for the first time today, after the recommendation of a friend. I was expecting more of a castle, but the interior of the home was beautiful, as were the grounds! I think what really made the experience special for us was our tour guide, Demi. She really helped the history to come alive, and gave us a nice mixture of history, anecdotes and even some ghost stories. I appreciate having such a knowledgable tour guide, because we live in Northern Virginia, and we've had our far share of sub par tour guides. There's also a pretty decent gift shop.
As a history lover, I am very fond of the site as well! Thank you for your visit! Please keep in touch with us via Facebook and our website for 2015 events and happenings!
Thank you so much for visiting Bacon's Castle. We're sorry that we missed you during the week. We can schedule tours by appointment even when we are closed. We also invite you to return when we're open again in March 2015. Our normal hours are Friay-Sunday 10am-5pm on Fridays an Saturdays and 12pm-5pm on Sundays!
We had to wait a bit for a tour, so during that time, we walked the grounds. It was a crisp autumn day, absolutely spectacular. They have several outbuildings, including servants quarters and gardens. Historic homes like this always make me so appreciative our what our ancestors (not that this family are my ancestors) have done for society over the centuries, not to mention the things our ancestors have endured. Anyway, the house is great. The tour is mostly about architecture. There is some furniture but that is not the entire focus. They also give you the full history of Bacon (who never lived there) and the history of the house. There are stairs, so the entire tour may not be possible for someone with limited mobility. The grounds are fully accessible, though. Tour is about 45 minutes. Guide was very knowledgeable. It's not busy there; our tour was about 6 people, so that was nice. We took the ferry from Jamestown, visited Bacon's Castle, then went on to Smithfield for a great day!
I took my 76 yr old Mother to Bacon's Castle as a birthday gift. The grounds are lovely and the house is breathtaking. Our guide was very friendly and knowledgable. She took the time to answer questions and did not rush us through the tour. The information shared was very educational and told in a way that made it very interesting. There is a nice gift shop and we were encouraged to take our time strolling through the outside gardens. We will definitely go back to enjoy this lovely house again.
My wife and I decided to tour this home after taking the ferry from Jamestown to the other side of the James River. A lot of the original Castle was still in tack. It's amazing how homes were built in that period. Worth stopping at.
We came across Bacon's Castle by pure chance and thank goodness we did as it is surely one of the best houses to visit in the whole area. Our tour guide, Linda was excellent, informative, knowledgeable and friendly. It's a shame that it isn't advertised more as I'm sure more people would visit if only they knew about it. If you like history and architecture, we would high recommend that you make the effort to visit Bacon's Castle.
The house contains portions from the 1660s and later periods. The knowledgeable guide provided a great tour of the house. Bacon's Castle was part of the first colonial rebellion against the British crown in the 17th century and is an ideal stop for those visiting Colonial Williamsburg and Jamestown. Recommend a visit to Smith's Fort Plantation on a drive to/from Williamsburg and Bacon's Castle.
Me and my husband had such a nice afternoon there. Perfect getaway from work and stress! The tour guide was very knowledgeable on the history of the house and the area. Highly recommend for anyone who loves local history or just needs to check out for a day. Michele and Michael Harris
My daughters and I took a tour of Bacon's Castle and found it to be very interesting and informative. Todd was an excellent tour guide. We learned a lot and recommend this tour to people interested in history and old homes.
Our scout troop enjoyed a first-class tour of this marvelous historical site. Our host and guide were honest, illuminating, educational and fun. The old building was intriguing. We even got to pick cotton and peanuts from the edges of the surrounding fields. I'd recommend Bacon's Castle to anyone interested architecture, history, storytelling, or simply exploring America's historical roots.
