We stopped here by chance because we got off RT95 to go to the Spotsylvania County Tourist Center to get a map of Virginia after seeing the sign on RT95 for it. The people there were wonderful and I would recommend going there for any information about that area. There are 4 battlefields in the area but we decided on this one since we could drive thru it. There are no park guides there but the brochures from the tourist center and the signage at the site were excellent. You can get out at points of interest walk around, read the signs and monument inscriptions and if you have more time and the ability to walk, follow the battlefield trails the soldiers used . If you want to get a real feel for what the Civil War was like, this is an excellent site that anyone can visit. The trenchworks made the horror of the war tangible and walking on the same ground that 30000 thousand died or were wounded on was sobering.
We were fortunate to have hired a historian, John Cummings from the area I found John under the Fredericksburg Tourist website. We spent 2 hours on tour with John. What a wonderful informational 2 hours that was. We toured the Court House Area first and were given information and shown sketches made during the Civil War time in the Court House Area and Battlefield area. We preceded to drive from to the Spotsylvania Courthouse Area to the battlefield. We spent time in different spots of the battlefield, the one my husband found most interesting was the area called the Bloody Angle, John pointed out and gave us so much interesting information regarding this battlefield here. We were fortunate to have a guide but they do have informational spots along the way to help understand what you are looking at. The battlefield area is a must see when you visit Fredericksburg its part of history that we should all understand.
Visit Spotsylvania Courthouse and relive the Battle that took place there in May of 1864. Use your imagination and see the carriages riding to and fro as well as visit the Spotsylvania Confederate Cemetary. B&Bs located very nearby as well.
If you are a civil war buff, then this is a good place to renew your history lessons. I went to this because a friend wanted to go. Otherwise, I'd call this a special interest place.
