Katie is great! She is a vibrant, energetic and knowledgeable, everything you are looking for in a winemaker! She gave us background on the vineyard and property, which always makes the experience more personable. We enjoyed the views and the wine was excellent. I have been to a dozen wineries in the Northern VA area and this is one that I ill sure to be back and visit.
Had a private wine tasting with Katie the wine maker this past weekend - it was wonderful. The property is quaint and beautiful and Katie and her family made each of us welcome. There was lots of laughter and we tried some great wine. They were celebrating their 6th birthday as we were there and we got to see the whole family in action. It was nice that they shared their story with their guests. The inside was slightly crowded but their was plenty of space and live music outside. Good atmosphere, and never felt pressured to buy anything.... but the desert wine was too good to pass up! Thanks again Katie and family!
This is my third visit to this winery. I highly recommend it. There is beautiful outside and inside seating. The landscape is absolutely gorgeous. The staff is friendly and the wine varietals are great. I really enjoyed their award winning Petite Verdot. They just built a lovely new complex for events and wine tasting. They are also pet friendly. This winery is worth the visit!
Casanel is a small, family run vineyard about five miles and fifteen minutes outside of Leesburg, VA. With only ten acres under cultivation they buy a lt of the grapes they use for wine making. The wines are serviceable if not great but by all means do a tasting (either $7 or $10 depending on the selections). Alternatively buy a bottle and some cheese and sit and enjoy the bucolic setting, a most enjoyable afternoon.
We had a very nice time in the tasting room. The staff was very friendly and chatty. The wine was good but not great. Overall, a really fun experience.
My husband (and 2 of our kids) and a friend visited this winery on Saturday. We live about 5 miles from it & had never been (lazy, I guess) and really enjoyed it. We enjoyed the Chardonnay (bought 3 bottles) and a bottle of Petit Verdot. We sat on the front patio & ate crackers, cheese, chips, and sipped our wine. There was a decent size crowd - about 25 people. We stayed about an hour & a 1/2. I will definitely go back.
My husband and I arrived at casanel shocked at the beauty hidden behind the main road, the vineyard is so large and set in between rolling hills with a pond right behind the stone barn tasting room. We came for a tasting and Mandy, who helped us, was awesome! She was fun and had great knowledge of the wines and history of the grounds. All in all it is a great winery with great staff!
Been coming here for several years. Just a great place to sit and relax. Good wine, good music and good friends.
Nice open land and space. The tasting room and outdoor seating area were very acommodating. It was cool to have the assistant wine maker and tasting room manager there. Mostly dry wines dominate the menu with the exception of one dessert wine that was fairly new. Purchased a bottle of Norton for it's light taste.
If you want a beautiful landscape with vineyards and a nice pond with good tasting wine for outdoor seating, Casanel is a good winery to visit. Yesterday was my second visit to the winery and we enjoyed a nice bottle of their Merlot with cheese and salami. I recommend visiting this winery.
My girlfriends and I decided to treat ourselves this past weekend and rented a car for the four of us to tour NoVA wineries. We were pleasantly surprised when a limo showed up instead of a car. Casanel was the last stop on our way home from an awesome day. We pulled into the parking lot and we're verbally accosted by a vineyard employee who rudely yelled from their patio that wine tasting was ending in ten minutes and we needed a reservation for all limos regardless of the party size. We never even had a chance to get out of the car. She continued to yell while we were trying to drive away. To top it off, this obnoxious employee called the limo company to complain about our driver not following the rules and made up a few other unfounded accusations. When we contacted the owner regarding this- he basically told us we should have called them first for their policies, noticed the sign on the way in and noticed the other signs on the way into the tasting room - umm - hello -we were in the back of a limo chatting and never had a chance to even get out of the limo to see your signs. Not once did he offer up an apology for his employees behavior or his own. Come to find out both of the other vineyards we visited that day had the same policy but obviously chose to handle the situation with professionalism and courtesy. With so many beautiful, customer service focused wineries out there - don't waste your time with this mess of a vineyard. Lastly, I noticed on Yelp the owner likes to reply with his irrelevant comments so I'm sure he'll do the same to this review!
If you're looking for a beautiful and tasty Virginia wine experience, Casanel is perfect for you! Only 6 years old, visitors can feel the passion for wine that the DeSouza family exhibits. The grounds and buildings include the patio, stone barn tasting room and Yellow Barn event center. Crackers, meats and cheeses are available for purchase but you can also bring your own picnic and buy a few bottles of their award winning wine to enjoy on the patio. My favorite wines include their Chardonnay, Norton and Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve.
This was our last vineyard stop on an excursion that had been just average, and in some cases, disappointing. The day was completely changed for the better by the friendly and personable server, Mandy, the family members/owners, and the delicious wines. The only sour note was the musician, whose guitar was twangy and too loud. Parking is abundant and the patio is spacious. The baguette and cheeses were good accompaniments to the cold Norton Rosé we shared.
My wife & I visited this winery on a beautiful Saturday in May. A very nice winery on the back roads of Loudon County. A very large winery with excellent wines, a very friendly staff. nice grounds and a nice snack selection We had a bottle of wine on their deck and horseback riders rode up..
Found Casanel by luck. Went there and almost everything was new and/or being worked on to look great. All staff friendly & knowledgeable. Mandy (our person doing the tasting) was awesome. The 3 of us enjoyed all the wines, especially the chardonnay and petite verdot. Mandy even brought us some of the reserve wines to taste. Ended up buying a case and that came with a 30% discount. The prices were below average for VA wines. They have a great patio, plenty of seating around the entire area, food and cheeses, water etc. They had a person on guitar and singing on Saturday. We will be back a lot. Some good pot holes coming up to the place, so drive careful. Most of the wines are on the dryer side, which we like. It was the best chardonnay I have had in VA...ever. $7 for 7 tastings or $10 for 6 reserve tasting.
