Its a great place for dinners, camping, or just nature walking. They have big play grounds near their shelter houses. The kids love it. Its convenient for parents having birthday parties.
There is a boardwalk that is 1 1/2 miles long, it has an observatory along the way, it's beautiful. You usually can see a lot of deer. Fall is the best time of year to go, when the leaves are falling.
Our campsite was very nice and we enjoyed walking one of the trails along Locust Creek. Bathrooms were well kept and cleaned on a daily basis. Wished there was a soap dispensor in the bathrooms. Showers had hot water and were very nice.
Visited the home of General John Pershing. Nice little ghost town but peaceful. Interesting information at the site and very historical.
We've been here several times, and enjoyed it every time. We've always been surprised by the fact that we see very, very few other people there, in spite of the fact that the park is very well maintained, has excellent picnic areas, several very nice trails, and a great variety of wildlife and birds to see. Our favorite walk there is a boardwalk trail that goes through a hardwood swamp out into a marsh area. The birding all along this boardwalk is excellent. On the edge of the marsh there is an observation tower, and there are several sitting areas along the boardwalk trail. There are forests, ponds, creeks, swamps, savannahs, and marshes there, and each holds its own variety of wildlife.
If you are ready for the great outdoors, then visit this park. It is small, but would suit your needs for a picnic or hike.
Since this park is close to us, we often use the boardwalk and park facilities for outings. Very well maintained and the camp sites are clean.
The park has campgrounds and picnic facilities and trails that explore the forest, swamp, and prairie that converge here.
