One of my favorite Ann Arbor experiences. Beautifully restored theater that always has some of the best movies worth watching. Popcorn with real butter, an organ player to serenade you before the movie starts, the whole experience is one worth having!
Excellent production, excellent cast, excellent training. University of Michigan Theatre Department is excellent.
If you want a great place to see a movie, avoid the multiplex and go to the Michigan. The place has been restored and it is a fantastic place to watch a film or listen to a live show. This is Elegance!
The Michigan Theater, a nonprofit historic theater from the 1930s, has been beautifully restored, and presents a variety of films, lectures, and concerts. Highly recommended if there's a show there that sounds appealing. And the popcorn has real butter!
We were delighted to learn on a recent visit to the Michigan Theater that they now serve beer and wine, so long as you buy a membership, a la The Ark. Membership is only $5 and it's good for a year, so well worth it. Armed with some delicious old fashioned popcorn and a glass of pinot noir, we headed up to the balcony and found a seat in the front row - the best place to sit in an old theater because there is no-one sitting in front of you. There is also a large ledge in front of the seats to put your drinks and popcorn. (The ledge is big enough that you don't really have to worry about knocking stuff over onto unsuspecting patrons on the first floor). The seats are old school too and you will notice how narrow they are compared to modern theater seats, but they are still more than suitable for an average sized adult. We enjoyed our movie , and out time at a true old fashioned theater, immensely.
Going to movies at the Michigan Theater is something my husband and I do fairly often. We enjoy the atmosphere and beauty of the theater. They serve wine, great popcorn and other good snack options. Wonderful place!
The Michigan Theater is one of my favorite places in Ann Arbor. I was there just last month for the Melissa Etheridge concert; the sound in the theater is amazing! It's a great place to go for movies, they provide community events like the Halloween visit for children, concerts, film festivals, you name it! The venue itself is an absolute gem; one of the nicest, small, local theaters, I've ever seen.
We enjoy a variety attractions at Michigan Theater. Often they are presentations of old movies like the Alfred Hitchcock Series which included an interview with Tippy Hedron. We also see movies that don't show at other theaters. We have also seen live presentations including plays.
This historic theater in the middle of Ann Arbor is a real treat. They show films that may not be seen anywhere else, run special weekend shows for kids, have Sundance, animation and other film festival winners often, and for many shows play a marvelous organ before the show. The theater is also used for many live performances; music, dance, drama. It is always a pleasure to attend something there.
This is a very nice old theater. The have a working pipe organ that is played before the showings too. The film selection is also very good.
Not meant for tall people. If you are over six feet skip this place. Go somewhere else. Needs new Seats.
We attended International Festival organised by Rotary. This included performances from China, Srilanka, India Iyerland.
The Michigan Theater is a stellar operation and deserves all the community support it can get. Their film selections are outstanding; their popcorn served with real butter; and they sell wine to those who are members. A movie experience that can't be beat.
This place is eye candy from almost 100 years ago. The restoration is boggling and yes the organ comes up out of the floor. As a member you can take wine or beer to your seat, how gentile. Thank you everybody who donates to keep this marvel going.
Don't miss seeing a film or live performance at the Michigan while in Ann Arbor. Built in 1928 & lovingly restored, w/original organ.
