We got to see the history of paper making in Wisconsin. There was a short video presentation as well as getting to see the world's first cloned tree (dead of course). Our guide even let us make paper, showing us the correct way to handle a "coochie".
If you want your kids to learn, you give them experiences they don't forget, like this one. Sure, there's plenty of interpretive displays on the history of paper-making and on it's face, covering that topic sounds like a 101 snoozer coming on, but this place infuses plenty of energy and interaction into the learning process. If your kids (or the kid in you) have not had the experience of making paper from pulp, you have to give yourself time to try it.The first time I did this with the kids I was chaperoning a field trip and we were able to learn from master paper-maker and well-known fiber artist, Tom Grade. The staff were incredibly patient and even 4 long hours of herding many large elementary classes through the paper-making process, they were still excited and engaged the kids as if we'd just walked in. It may not be a exciting topic to make a special trip for, but you come away with fun memories and are grateful that you did it. We still have the paper shapes the kids made that day hanging in our living room.
My husband and I went with my family to the PDS. What a fun afternoon! I'm a crafty person and enjoyed learning how to make paper. They have a museum of info graphics about paper in this area and it's very interesting. Definitely a fun little stop in Appleton! Their gift shop also offers a bunch of goods - I purchased a paper making kit, complete with supplies. I'm excited to make my own paper at home!
My husband and I stopped here as we were in the area for a wedding and although we're in the Appleton area fairly frequently, we had never been to the Paper Discovery Center. After paying the fairly low admission price ($5/adult, I believe), we were shown a short video to introduce us to the paper industry, specific to the Fox Cities region. Then, we began our self-guided tour and learned a ton. After looking around for about an hour or so, a staff member offered to help us make our own handmade sheet of paper. This was our favorite part! All in all, we were very glad we stopped by. The museum is small, but has lots of interesting things in it. The staff was very friendly and knowledgeable. The items in the gift shop were really cute, too! I'm not sure we'd stop every time we're in the area since it is fairly small and you can easily see everything within a visit, but if you've got a free couple of hours, it would definitely be worth your while to take a look.
We went for a school field trip and I was happily surprised at the high level of interaction there was for the students. They were able yo make connections between the simple machinss we studied in class and had a great time with all the activities.
For a low cost ($5 per adult, $3 per child, or $12 for a family) the attraction consists of a short 3 minute movie, self guided educational tour, and guided crafts. The highlight was that they help you make your own paper that you can take home, which was informative and fun. A great time for a great price!
Want to know how trees become paper? This place will show you. Paper is made from other stuff than just trees... have fun and make your own sheet of paper. Be sure to look out the windows when you are here. The river view of the rapids is great.
Ever wonder about paper??? I didn't but after going through the Paper Discovery Center I discovered lots of interesting facts about paper and saw some really cool things.Well worth the trip to the river front and then stop in the little coffee restaurant for a beverage on the back porch and then go next door to that for a dinner on the waters edge. Just a wonderful little day adventure all wrapped up in one location!
We visited this museum recently with our son and daughter -in-law and grandchildren 4 & 6. At first glance, I thought this might have been a mistake for our very active grandchildren. However, I soon realized that there was much there to keep even that age group engaged. They loved to make paper and the instructor was very patient with the boys. This is a gem for the area. We would have liked for all of our grandchildren to have been able to learn about paper here.
Location is gorgeous and worked into the museum's displays nicely. Very interesting place, but best of all is that you get to make a piece of paper. Brought out my inner child - I had a great time and enjoyed every minute. Wonderful docents! This is well worth the small admission charge. There was also a very nice looking small coffee shop next to the museum.
Very neat place to learn history about paper and how it impacted this region of Wisconsin. Staff was very nice. We got to make our own paper to take home which was pretty cool. All in about 45 minutes -- so well worth the trip and nominal charge.
This Discovery center is in a retired paper mill (2000).You see a 5 min video about the paper mill industry, other exhibits and then you make paper yourself. A different activity that kids should enjoy. A good rainy day activity.
Very interesting and well thought out displays. Making the recycled paper was a lot of fun for the kids.
Only managed to take some pictures outside, due to the location time.Mas pleased by the conservation and importance given to the past the technology!
Great activity for a family. Simple and brief history on the making of paper. Well produced introductory video/movie (about 5 minutes) provides a quick overview of the history of paper making and how the making and use of paper has evolved. Great hands on activities for kids and adults alike. Oragami paper folding centers, science activity centers and our favorite - the make your own piece of paper center (all includeded with admission). Fun "paper factory" play area for kids including slide and dress ups. Just outside the building is a great view of the river as well. While we were there in August there were a dozen or so pelicans making their temporary visit at the river. I would recommend this to families/adults of all ages. Young ones 4 and under will need more assistance. Plan on an hour visit. Admission pricing very reasonable. We paid their family rate of $12 - check website for more info.
